  • My take: Eberflus has done a decent job with the defense after getting healthy and adding Sweat. But he’s the Head Coach and not the DC. He takes responsibility for the entire team, not just the defense. So, IMO he should go for the crap offense, the penalties, game management, lack of accountability, and throw in mysterious coaches being fired…

I could maybe see him sticking around with a different OC if they decide to keep Fields. If they draft a QB I think they HAVE to go with an entire new staff. The argument if which way to go has been had, so won’t get into that here…

And you’re correct, no one is going to take a demotion nor would a new HC want that in his new staff.

DCs today are a little easier to come by with the push for offensive head coaches. We don’t have to stick with a pure Tampa 2 style either. 4-3 base of any type is fine (and honestly don’t think a switch to 3-4 would be that difficult either) as our DBs our fairly solid in Man if that’s how we want to go.

  • This gets said a lot. But many of these teams didn’t plan on building the rest of the team first. They tried to get their QB while building, and either failed or the very least figured out he wasn’t quite good enough to get to the top level as the rest of the team got better. A lot of the time upgrading QB after the rest of the roster is built is plan B.

  • I think we need an offensive coach that can evaluate, develop and scheme for a QB. I could be sold on a defensive coach under the right circumstances, but would be a difficult sell.

We need to get Flus and Getsy out of the damn building, bring in a new, hopefully competent, staff that will be a part of the QB evaluation going into the offseason. Let them and Poles (or possibly new GM) figure out the best path forward for QB.

Definitely not an expert, but I’d be super happy with Waldron or Ben Johnson at this point. I would be able to get behind whatever they decide to do with QB going forward.

  • Copying from another of my comments. Take Johnson and insert any high demand coaching candidates this offseason

I totally agree Johnson COULD make Fields better. But do you think you can convince him to come here in those circumstances? That’s what I’m saying, people have this idea that a new coach could change Fields. But how many will want to take that on over going to a place they can either A) pick ‘their guy’ or B) have a much better QB in place, like Herbert in SD if Staley gets the boot???

Bringing in a new coaching staff, Bears are more likely to draft QB and replace Fields. Not less likely.

  • There is a portion if this sub that will hate this, but reality is, this is the most likely scenario as things stand now. If we have a top 2 pick, it will be a QB (yes, Fields has 7 games to ‘prove it’ but odds of him doing enough to not take a qb are very very slim). Throw in if we move on from Flus and bring in a new coach, odds of QB are even higher yet.

I could see a trade down with the 2nd pick if Poles wanted to go DL or another WR if he decides to role with Jones at LT.

  • I don’t. For his faults, I think that was one situation that Poles handled perfectly at the time.

He improved the O Line, brought in a legit #1 receiver to give Fields weapons and improve protection (granted injuries on the o-line killed that for a good portion if the season and there is still work to do, but we’ve seen the improvement recently as guys are getting healthy).

Then got that future first, which gave him a Fields insurance policy in a draft that most analysts agreed at the time is a better QB prospect draft overall. Looking at the context at the time it was an extremely sound move by him.
