Let’s say Fields continues to play well down the stretch and the Bears pick up his option and ride with him next year.
I’d still love to see them draft a QB in the earlyish rounds. Not with a top 10 pick (unless someone falls into their lap), but as early as round 2 (if they get a 2nd in a trade).
Who are your guys’ favorite QB prospects in the 2nd and beyond?
I also like Joe Milton out of Tennessee.
I want the Bears to draft a middle round QB no matter what. Even if we take Caleb we should draft another QB prospect if the value makes sense. You can’t have too many lottery tickets at QB.
Maybe Bagent is the answer at QB2. Fields isn’t the answer at QB1, but if we go with your proposal, we still need to grab another QB who could maybe become the next Russ, Kirk or Brady.
If we take Caleb and move on from Fields we should still grab a QB for the exact same reason. If Caleb gets hurt or busts we should have another roll of the dice on the roster.
Next year, we should draft another QB unless we have a absolute stud at QB with zero questions. And if Caleb is that stud, we still draft a QB every 3 years just in case.
QB is more important than every other position by a factor of 10.
I agree. Especially because of how difficult the position is to project to the NFL.
The Bears aren’t drafting a replacement for Tyson Bagent.
If they draft a QB, it will be to replace Fields.
I like Bagent as the QB2 to Fields, but if we’re talking late round QB prospects just because, I’d go with Jayden Daniels or KJ Jefferson… I also have been a fan of Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina. I don’t think any of them would be hard to get in round 6 or later (maybe JD) and would benefit from sitting while Fields plays for 2 more years.
No point in drafting a QB outside of the first. They rarely pan out. Either you’re in or out on Fields.
One example off the top of my head. The Patriots when they had Brady. Matt Cassell, Jimmy G… there’s at least one more I’m forgetting. Anyways, the Patriots drafted QBs often and it paid off in spaids as far as keeping seasons going if Brady was hurt or bringing back hauls in trades. In the Bears’ current situation (a QB who could very likely get another year or two but you’re not totally sold on) it seems to make a ton of sense. Especially since they have so much draft capital.
Using a top 150 pick on a guy who probably won’t be better than Tyson Bagent feels like a waste.
Bagent came out and had one good game. He then struggled. He is a mirage.
We should not do anything because of bagent
Any backup will struggle. If you play nothing but good games, you’re a starter. Bagent didn’t make a ton of mistakes and didn’t look lost. Compared to a lot of backups we have had here, that’s improvement, not a mirage.
I mean kinda depends on who QB 3 is, I think Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix are my two favorite past Williams/Maye but I just don’t see how likely this path is
I hope they don’t do this. I like Fields, but they either need to commit or move on with this draft. No in between. No gray area. Get a top QB, or sure up other areas. Maybe the best compromise is to trade down again for another DJ type asset, but even so that’s just delaying the inevitable. I like trading down ONLY if we get fresh coaching staff.
I like J.J. McCarthy. He’s sharp, very young, and has all the talent in the world. He’s also gotten a lot better over his time as a starter. Growth is important. I believe the smartest thing the Bears could do is keep him, draft someone developmental like a McCarthy or Bo Nix. Penix does not have the true arm strength for the NFL. You need a guy who can throw darts from time to time. Quinn Ewers is another guy that fits that mold of being a developmental prospect.
I agree with you too by the way. I believe if we trade back one of our higher picks to stock up on more capital while snagging one of these guys it could be the smartest decision we make as an organization. Let them sit and learn for a bit and get used to the game behind a vet. Learn what works and what doesn’t without being in the line of fire. That’s what the Chiefs did with Mahomes, Packers did with Rodgers, and is generally what good franchises do to build a sustainable team. Look at San Fran, they built up the roster around the QB position and now have a 7th round guy looking pretty darn good.
Anyway, I will get downvoted because everyone wants Maye or Williams, which I get. I just question whether that is the right move. There’s no guarantee they play like C.J. Stroud, Burrow, or Herbert. Those guys are exceptions, not the norm.
Drafting a QB makes a lot more sense in 2025. We can afford to be patient with Fields, but if someone that Poles likes drops for some reason then I say we draft him.
I’d rather stack the team for Fields, and if he doesn’t get to the level we need in 24 or 25 then we draft a qb into our now stacked team.
Penix all day everyday.
He’s gonna be the steal of the draft.
Get a cheap veteran backup and let’s draft to build the playing roster
Daniels-Penix-Taulia. I’d say I value Daniels at an early second, Penix around middle of day 2, and Taulia early day 3.
I understand we don’t have a second but I’m okay using next years pick(keep the panthers second) to move up if we have to.
This is what I was thinking too, but this is definitely not a popular opinion
I think at that point you only do it as a value pick. If you see a QB in those 3 - 4 rounds that you value much higher you take him, because at a certain point the value just matters. I think like what Wash. did with Kirk Cousins.
