  • This is just wrong.

At that level, you expect the elite of the elite to dominate.

This is nonsense. Mahomes had a losing record in college. Brady didn’t dominate college. There are plenty of QBs that were elite in the NFL, but did not dominate in college.

That’s what got him on the radar as a generational prospect.

Williams has been a highly sought-after prospect since being 12 years old.

The things he put on tape this year feel a lot like what we’ve seen the last 3 years with Fields and that is concerning because of the value of the #1 overall pick. He holds the ball too long, and hangs on his reads trying to push the ball deep.

Outside of them holding onto the ball long, they aren’t comparable players. I can only imagine what stats Williams could put up if you dropped him on that OSU team. Williams had a very productive year playing with a terrible defense, and outside of him, a bad offense. The OL was bad. His receivers were bad. The game plan was basically, make a first read and if its not there, scramble around to buy time until someone might get open. Honestly, outside of both being black, I don’t think they are remotely similar players.

  • As many others have said, if it was as simple as drafting the guy with the best stats, then no one would ever miss on QBs. You would draft the guy with the best college stats, and create some threshold for not drafting guys below that stat line.

But it doesn’t work that way. I’m not going to pretend to be a talent evaluator or have watched every snap of Williams this year, but when I watch him, he’s just different.

Also, Williams’ stats from this year are fucking awesome considering it’s a “down” year for him. Speaking from my friend group text and what I see on Reddit, it’s just “cool” and in vogue to hate on Williams.

  • No one is claiming that Getsy is good, but we have no idea why he’s calling the plays he calls and we may never know unless and until it leaks after 1) Getsy is fired; or 2) the Bears move on from Fields.

Getsy is not going to throw Fields under the bus in season especially if they plan to shop him this offseason. I suspect that stuff might only leak if Getsy is fired, and he needs to rehab his reputation.

Everyone wants to jump on Getsy for bad playcalling, and I do think that some of it is well-deserved. But I have also seen plenty of good play calls and play designs so we know that he is capable. We have also heard that his reputation is still good throughout the league so it leads me to believe that the NFL believes its more Fields than Getsy.

  • I posted this in another thread.

Here’s the rub about the offensive play calling.

Yes, 21 passes at or near the line of scrimmage is incredibly frustrating and boring. But, fans are choosing to ignore the 5-10 plays where Fields looked downfield and either nothing was there or someone was open, but he didn’t throw (I don’t know which from the TV copy).

There were plenty of plays that just didn’t go anywhere. I would assume those were intended to be down field throws and it didn’t happen for whatever reason.

Would you rather have screen passes for 2-5 yards, or several 3 and outs?

Everyone wants to blame Getsy, and maybe he deserves it, I don’t know. But not enough people consider that maybe Getsy has his hands tied and these are the only plays he can call that have a decent chance to gain positive yards.

  • There’s also a lot of people who saw him demonstrate immature behavior. In the Notre Dame game he was yelling at his teammates

These criticisms are such nonsense. Tom Brady would throw hissy fits on the sideline all the time. He’d yell at players, break tablets, etc. Aaron Rodgers is famous for shitbag behavior too. Players get emotional on the sidelines all the fucking time. Just ask yourself why Williams is getting so much hate, but this behavior is excused for other players.

Also, you are making shit up about lower ceiling/lower floor of Fields. This is quite literally the opposite.

  • While it has not worked out this way, the general wisdom was that Fields flashed enough to keep his job one more year (which he did IMO) and that was primed to take the 3rd year leap with the addition of a true WR1 (which he did not IMO).

I think that Stroud will ultimately end up being the real deal, but I think it is too hasty to crown him after 10 games.

The Bears might not end up with a lot of wins this year, but Poles set up this team to continue its growth. The Bears received a haul back for the Number 1 pick, and could potentially up with the Number 1 overall pick again this year along with a WR1, RT, and young defensive assets that continue to grow. The defense has already improved, and could be 1-2 DL away from being truly formidable.
