    17) Justin Fields, Chicago Bears

Justin Fields is one of the most dangerous entities in the NFL, but he’s hamstrung by the Chicago Bears offensive line and schematic structure. Minnesota did not allow him to attack downfield. They blitzed him early and often, forcing the ball out of his hands quickly.

But Fields also needs to do a better job of protecting the football. That is something that the Josh Allens and Lamar Jacksons of the world tend to struggle with. Their endless playmaking efforts put the ball in adverse situations. Fields’s relentless pursuit of wrenching himself out of sacks puts the ball at risk too much.

But if he had time to operate the same way his successor at Ohio State has in Houston … Instead, they’re stuck throwing screens and praying their pass catchers can break a few tackles.

  • Fumbles are bad. They were rushing only three or four, and had 7 or 8 in coverage. Fields had fewer options and the Vikings took away the passing game in the fourth quarter. You saw Fields holding the ball and looking all over for open guys, I guess there weren’t any. It’s not like he was pulling the ball down and running without thinking pass first. Apparently no one was there to throw to. That happens when a team is playing 7 back. You saw in some of the wide shots, especially when Fields ran, the linebackers were deeper. The problem I saw all night was when the Vikings didn’t blitz, their four guys were still beating our 5 or 6 guys and getting heat on Fields. However, Fields did make several impressive plays, running out of the pocket and finding open receivers. Overall, he had a good, not great game. The defense was ridiculously good last night. The only downside I saw was again, the terrible play calling. People say “well Fields can’t throw down field more than five yards” First, that isn’t true. Second, that’s not the game the OC called. I just hope Getsy and Co. don’t get it in their heads that last nights gameplan “worked” because it didn’t. Moore, Fields, Kmet, and others MADE it work.

  • My unpopular opinion amongst Redditors, but not actual football experts is that if the Bears get two top five picks, they need to move #1 to some team that desperately needs a QB (the Bears don’t) get a lower pick and maybe a player or two that can help immediately. There are far too many holes on the team (especially the sieve like defense) that can’t be fixed by adding Harrison or a new QB. You have the high picks, get the most bang for your buck in terms of quantity of upper echelon picks. There are many, many areas that need reinforcement. The defensive line (pass rush) the offensive line (Bears QB still running for their lives) and the defensive back field. Mahomes, Goff, Wilson, and others picked the secondary apart. Part of that is because of poor pass rush, but coverage was bad in those losses too.
