  • This is the main issue of this argument. We have to be able to properly understand both Fields and Getsy are issues. It is not just one or the other here.

Yes, Getsy has a horrible game plan and it was so bad that even Buck and Aikman were laughing out loud at the repeated failure of screen after screen after screen.

But that had zero impact upon Fields fumbling twice, on back to back drives in the 4th quarter with the game on the line. And those fumbles are 100% all on him, just like many of his other previous fumbles. He uses really bad technique when he runs the ball, and he’s careless with it in situations where ball security is priority #1.

He is fortunate that the defense was balling out, or last night would have been another loss in the division due to his inability to be clutch.

Think of it this way: if Getsy was fired tomorrow, and we brought in a new OC. Does that make Fields more clutch than he is now? Does it help solve his turnover problems? Does it remediate his concerning injury history? Does it make him a QB that can win solely from the pocket if needed?

Good things to consider when you’re evaluating the team, it isn’t just one or the other

  • I couldn’t be more happy that it was not Colinsworth and Tirico on the call last night, good god I can only imagine the random and ridiculous tangents Colinsworth would have gone on watching that game. Probably 10-15 minutes talking about how Mahomes would be doing something different than Fields/Dobbs and another 20 minutes talking about how much Fields learned from watching Bagent and those quick passes/screens.

  • I’m sorry, I just can’t wrap my head around this shift where now everyone is clamoring for us to take MHJ even if we land at the #1 spot.

Don’t get me wrong, the dude is a complete monster and will be one of the best WRs to come out of the draft in a long while. But are we all forgetting the order of operations here? WRs live and die at the hands of their OC and QB combo. Sure, elite WRs will be good even with bad QB play, but it will never be enough to win games outright. Only the QB position can determine that.

If you don’t believe me, go ask Davante Adams about how he feels leaving Aaron Rodgers for LV. He got the bag he wanted, but can’t handle the fact he isn’t being used to his abilities. He is a nobody when he has guys like O’Connel and Hoyer throwing to him.

Calvin Johnson is arguably the greatest WR we’ve seen in the past 3-4 decades, and he never got a single postseason win his entire career. He was on the Lions when the team went 0-16 in one season.

Deandre Hopkins plummeted after he lost Kyler Murray and now plays for the Titans.

Conversely, guys like Stefon Diggs and A.J. Brown have become stars because they finally had elite QBs throwing to them.

I would support the Bears taking MHJ if they only had 1 first round pick that was in the 7-10 range, meaning most of the higher QB prospects were off the board. But if we are picking at 2 or 1 (especially 1) it has to be a QB, and I don’t think tossing MHJ onto this roster with Fields will make him looks much better than he is now. He’s already got an elite WR in DJ Moore, and the results still aren’t good enough to justify keeping him.

At least, not for the long term, he is in no way a QB you want to pay the bag to by any means. So no reason to waste a prime opportunity to take a swing on a younger rookie, so you can continue to build the roster up without being beholden to a huge QB contract that restricts how much you can spend.

  • I mean, from what Josh Lucas has said everyone was in agreement that he should have sat the entire first year. In fact, they drafted him specifically planning to let him develop a bit more because of some of the pre-draft concerns people had regarding Fields.

In my opinion, I wish Andy would have started that entire season, Giving Justin reps in blowouts or garbage time action to allow him to build with live reps without overwhelming him.

But it’s football, and no matter how old or young you may be, the next man up mentality is crucial. Dalton going down with injury basically opened a can of worms that couldn’t be put back, and Nagy basically stuck with JF after Andy’s recovery because he knew the pressure from the fan base/front office was too high.

Look, I know hindsight is 20/20 and as time passes the rose-colored lenses set in. But if we are comparing strictly on a 1-1 basis, I’d take Nagy over Flus in a heartbeat. And while his scheme was eroding, and really hurt Justin early on, I don’t truly think he had quite enough time to understand Justin as a player overall. He never got to see this version of Fields, or anything close to it for that matter. With a full offseason with him as QB1, he would have gotten more out of JF than Flus/Getsy has.

And before you comment to remind me how bad Nagy was at times, don’t bother. I know he wasn’t a good HC at all by the end of it, and there’s a vast amount of coaches I would choose over him. It’s just that, in this case, Flus is not one of those coaches. Neither is Getsy in my opinion.

  • No matter what we need a new OC and HC, in my opinion there’s going to be nothing a few more wins on the back end of another awful season will do to change that.

However, here’s a potential scenario that I think would work and would allow Flus to stick around. If he was willing to transition to a full-time DC, I think he would be much more successful in that role. He just doesn’t have the requisite skill or experience as a HC to get it done, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Many coordinators are great in that role and then go on to suck as HCs, and since he’s taken over the defense full time there is no denying it has gotten much better since Williams was let go.

Now of course, it’s a long shot this would actually happen because most people would not want to essentially demote themselves to a lesser role voluntarily. But, I don’t see many other teams knocking on the door clamoring for him to be their new HC, so there’s a chance he could be talked into it given the right circumstances.

Getsy, on the other hand, has got to go. Even more so than Flus, because at least Flus is showing his side of the ball can be consistent week-to-week. Getsy has become glaringly blinded by his scheme and his personal approach to what good NFL offenses should look like. He is refusing to scheme to a player’s skill set, and instead expects everyone to bend to fit his scheme. And I’m not just referring to Fields here, during Bagent’s stretch I felt he was often putting him in some awful situations and expecting far too much out of him. He has consistently shown a troubling lack of ability to adapt/adjust in-game, and also struggles to embrace what works over what he wants to see from the offense.

Ultimately, all of this is gonna boil down to the McCa$$keys (as it far too often does). If they truly are going to keep their word and allow Warren and Poles to take the wheel, then I’ll have hope the right staff will be brought in. But if they insist on being involved once again and opt to bring in some former NFL “expertise”, then we’re boned. They also may insist in keeping everyone around next year, which is just as bad too.

    Time will tell.

  • Honestly, I didn’t expect to win through the air regardless of who was in at QB.

Foreman against his former team that is the 28th ranked run defense, with a few key injuries on their D-line during their previous game.

DJ against his former team, also looking to bounce back in a big way after a bad game in NO.

An improving defense against a rookie QB that has an O-line in shambles

If the Bears win, it will be a complete team win. Very similar to the LV game. We just have to hope Getsy actually sticks to what’s working and doesn’t immediately panic and call screens and 5-wide every other play.

If he starts putting too much on Bagent and he starts struggling, the Panthers would be in prime position to take advantage, and the last thing we want to do is make things easy for Bryce with short fields and

  • He will retire a Patriot, if he had any desire to leave he’d have done that already.

And even if he could come to Chicago, I wouldn’t want him in the slightest. Dude is becoming more and more exposed the longer he goes without Tom Brady. Anybody that hires Bill O’Brien to be an OC (who quite literally destroyed the Texans as a franchise for years) is not a HC I’d want on a modern NFL team.

  • There is no fire from anyone at all. Nobody seems to give a damn outside of DJ, Mooney, Kmet and JJ. I get that there’s life outside of football, but man it would be nice to see a coach and team that plays with pride in themselves at the very least. They get embarrassed every other week and it never phases them. Everyone sits and takes it and sulks on the bench or chops it up like it’s a Sunday afternoon cookout. You’d think at some point Flus would grow some balls and start holding people accountable, considering his job is on the line, but even he seems like he doesn’t wanna be there anymore. It is an outright disgrace.

What pisses me off more than anything is how they sewed Butkus’ number onto their jerseys after he passed. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great gesture and obviously like the idea of honoring him as much as possible, but as a coach I’d be outright livid that we play like that wearing 51 on our chests. Representing a guy who did so much for the team and was tougher than anybody, never gave up and always fought as hard as he could. It’s absolutely disgusting to watch these players/coaches mail it in over and over when things get hard. The staff are cowards and the players aren’t preparing enough to do the right things.

They don’t deserve to be wearing 51 if they’re gonna play like that, Butkus would never tolerate the bullshit that goes on at Halas if he were in his prime and on the team right now. He would make damn sure of that, I know for a fact.

  • In my opinion that’s even more of an indictment on the coaching staff, because the majority of their job is instilling fundamentals and ensuring the position coaches under them are meeting their expectations. It’s not a coincidence we have so many penalties, blown coverages and miscues every week. Top-Bottom the coaching staff is completely inept, they aren’t properly teaching good and sound foundational techniques and fundamental mindsets into these young players.

I think at times the coaches do get more hate than they deserve, but that doesn’t mean the coaches are vindicated from responsibility in this mess. I know many are quick to say “well, they are only as good as the players they have to work with” but I think that’s just an excuse for average coaches when they don’t elevate others. Great coaches still find a way to get the most out of the roster they lead, and at the very least the ensure their guys aren’t in a position to beat themselves. You might lose, but it won’t be because you dropped the ball. There’s been tons of games in which I feel like we just beat ourselves, and there is no effort by the staff to implement changes or hold those who are undisciplined accountable. Flus and Getsy have no fire, and no confidence to lead a group of grown men correctly.
