This is why I think we need a split award. MLB has the Cy Young for the best pitcher, and the MVP for every other position. You can win both in the same year as a pitcher, but you have to hit an even higher standard for that. So whether it’s Most Outstanding Quarterback or “winning the Montana Award” or whatever, you get a designated QB award and open up MVP to WRs, RBs, DBs, Dlinemen, hell maybe even an olineman if somebody has that crazy a season. And doing it like that wouldn’t even force you to get rid of OPotY or DPotY either, so why not?

Just give an award for best player at each position. Football is such a a team sport that having a single MVP seems odd (considering your QB is nothing without your oline, etc.).

We don’t need another award though, just a rebranding/marketing imo. MVP should be the quarterback award and offensive and defensive player of the year should be everything else.

As good as Garrett is I don’t think you can give it to a defensive player unless they win the Superbowl or something. They’re a just too much value on offensive now to say they’re not the most valuable players in the league.

That’s what they basically currently do. Qbs offensive players and defensive players all have their own award it just hasn’t been explicitly stated about mvp

except its not really that uncommon for QBs to win OPOY. Almost half (20/50 winners since it was created in '72) of the OPOYs have been QBs

But a lot of the times it’s the same QB who wins MVP. If you simply didn’t allow voting for the same guy at both OPOY and MVP I think that’d more or less fix it.

eh you still get seasons like '11 where OPOY is just MVP Runner Up, giving Brees the OPOY cause in any other year his season would be worthy of MVP, he just happened to have it in a historic season by Rodgers

Yeah but that’s pretty rare in general, it’s much more common where the MVP is also awarded OPOY which is stupid.

Make a one award limit and just give them the best award available. So if the league had three amazing QBs that year the best gets MVP, the next best gets OPotY, the next gets the Best QB award. This way there are also Best WR, Best RB, and Best TE awards

i think hes saying QBs wouldnt be allowed to win MVP, which would be kinda silly, because theyre obviously the most valuable players

imo keep MVP the same and make a non qb award, maybe make it so QBs arent allowed to win OPOY

The difference is that in baseball the most valuable hitter is usually more valuable than the best pitcher. In football it’s the opposite, the best quarterback will the most valuable player at minimum 95% of the time. Why not just give MVP to the player that is actually the most valuable, and and OPOY has to go to a non-QB?

If they do, I bet they go with the “Starr QB Award”. keeps the Packers motif with the Lombardi, and I think it’s ultimately the catchiest.

          NFL, pay me. 😂

I’m cool w/it as a longtime osu beaver fan. I had season tickets til I was 18, doubt I missed more than 2 maybe 3 home games Derek played from 01-04.

He was exciting in college with a big arm & big stats late in his career, and he played with Steven Jackson 01-03.

So yeah, I’ll just remember that Derek Anderson

Rename the MVP to the Peyton Manning Most Valuable Quarterback Award, and make the SBMVP the Tom Brady SBMVP.

Lol The Marino is dope. It’ll never happen but it should.

They should have a massive fan poll lasting months trying to get tens of millions of votes and see who comes out as the top 2 QB’s.

#1. Gets RSMVP name, while #2 gets SBMVP award.

Feel like it would be way easier to just make OPOY a non-QB than create a second award. Given the nature of the sport, QB is always gonna be the most valuable position/player anyways, MVP is already basically a QB-only award. And we already have all-pro for the best at every position

Or just make it so you can’t vote for the same player at both MVP and OPOY. Having two different QBs be MVP and OPOY is pretty rare and I think just making the voters look elsewhere for OPOY would give it to a non-QB much more frequently.

This is kind of how it feels sometimes.

By the nature of the position, QB is usually the most valuable player on any given team. There are some exceptions, but usually, a team can live or die based on the health of their QB. Take a team like the Vikings. They haven’t had Justin Jefferson, who is easily their actual best player. But people thought their season was officially done when Cousins got hurt…until they got Dobbs, who is playing really well.

I think at the very least, OPOY shouldn’t be the same player that won MVP except for very rare circumstances where a guy is just that good.

I only casually watch baseball, but isn’t that how aces are viewed? The Ace of a team is on-par with a quality quarterback based on my understanding.

Not really. Aces have a very large impact on the game, but they only play 1 in every 5 games. Even then, it’s not as big of an impact, because bullpens are so important nowadays, so an Ace is only pitching for 2/3rds of the game. Baseball also tends to have a lot of pitching depth, because pitching injuries are really common, so teams are very prepared for it. Most teams have 7 or 8 guys in their organization that they’d be comfortable starting. Losing an ace is a big deal in the playoffs, but still nearly as drastic as losing your starting QB.

Yeah, they should make a award for the best defensive player of the year. While at that make one for the offensive player of the year too. They could also make an award for All Pro football positions.
