Fields is pretty much middle of the pack in most statistics. People keep saying he needs to play like an MVP to stay and I’m wondering why that is the bar? If he’s consistently an average QB, I say build the rest of the team and see if you can find good coaches. A first round QB is just as likely to be worse than better.

He isn’t consistently average. His strengths and weaknesses are so extreme that he fluctuates between great and terrible. His stats look average right now, but 8 of his 12 touchdowns came from 2 games. That inconsistency isn’t sustainable.

9 of his 12 TDs came from the last 3 full games he played - there’s been a clear jump in performance and it’s not swinging back & forth like your comment implies. He’s only played 6 games, so saying “8 of 12 TDs came from 2 games” doesn’t mean all that much

That’s a fair point. From my POV it’s hard to disentangle Field’s inconsistency from Getsy’s. There’s enough blame for both. Watching games it always feels like Getsy moves away from what’s working. I see improvement in pocket presence and anticipation, but I could see people being out on him for that.

There are two ways to build a contender.

      1. Draft a top 5 QB and build your team around him with whatever capital your GM has left to work with.
      2. Have a Kyle Orton quality QB and build your team with expensive weapons with the piles of cash your GM has to work with.

      Pick one.

It seems like most of this sub wants to have Option #1. I wouldn’t be upset with Option #2 even if that meant that our QB was Justin Fields.

The Bears have never demonstrated an ability to judge or develop QBs. They need to stick with Fields one more year while he’s cheap on a rookie deal and re-assess after next season with a new coaching staff. The current staff and scheme is so dysfunctional that I don’t believe you can properly assess anyone, let alone the starting quarterback. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams both have flaws that an organization like the Bears will not overcome. There should be two strategies going into this draft. Option A should be MHJ and the best OL available with the second first round pick. Option B is trading back if some team is willing to sell the farm for Williams or Maye.

Fields is an average QB with the current coaches and roster. I’m not convinced that he couldn’t be a top 10 guy if those improve. Top WRs and LTs also command a high price, but their hit rate in the top picks is much higher than for QBs. If the team actually looks good and Fields is still average, I agree with option 1, but until then I think we can still build.
