Fields is an average QB with the current coaches and roster. I’m not convinced that he couldn’t be a top 10 guy if those improve. Top WRs and LTs also command a high price, but their hit rate in the top picks is much higher than for QBs. If the team actually looks good and Fields is still average, I agree with option 1, but until then I think we can still build.
The Bears have never demonstrated an ability to judge or develop QBs. They need to stick with Fields one more year while he’s cheap on a rookie deal and re-assess after next season with a new coaching staff. The current staff and scheme is so dysfunctional that I don’t believe you can properly assess anyone, let alone the starting quarterback. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams both have flaws that an organization like the Bears will not overcome. There should be two strategies going into this draft. Option A should be MHJ and the best OL available with the second first round pick. Option B is trading back if some team is willing to sell the farm for Williams or Maye.
There are two ways to build a contender.
Pick one.
It seems like most of this sub wants to have Option #1. I wouldn’t be upset with Option #2 even if that meant that our QB was Justin Fields.
