1:03.
55 yards, from the 50 to 5 yards in the endzone, from a standing start. Straight over his receivers shoulder for the catch. And it’s no floating duck.
Another one at 1:58.
And this highlight video was posted Summer 2020.
Given he was born in June 2000, and the College season would have been the preceding winter, he was fucking 19 in this video.
And people think this guy can’t throw deep (let alone improve his arm strength)…
Given how ugly his deep balls have been so far with the Bears, I think the questions are fair. But I also think people are blowing it way out of proportion. Hopefully he can make a couple of decent longer throws in an NFL game and we can put this whole thing to rest.
It just has to be a mechanical issue. If he can sort it out the potential to throw deep is there but until then the coaches will be hesitant to let him uncork it at all
The DJ Moore throw, he was getting an OL pushed back into his face. He may not have been contacted, but he couldn’t step into his throw one bit.
I don’t know how legit his deep arm is either, but I’m certainly not gonna anoint him “Noodle Joe” without seeing more than a game-and-a-half, with a conservative gameplan.
Hell, even most of the media room laughed at him when he said “I’ve got a cannon.”
I really hope he can prove the doubters wrong.
I think this week he’s going to have a longer leash than previous games. I’m sure we’ll see a few deep shots and I’d put money on the very first pass he throws being a deep shot laser.
You are talking about one throw…
Nah, I’m talking more than one throw. The deep ball to Scott (where they got the PI call) was badly underthrown too, and the deep crossing route to Moore was kind of a weak throw that got him lit up. And the did take him out for that Mail Mary, which was weird.
And conversely there hasn’t been ONE good deep throw to point to, to offset those bad ones.
Listen, I’m excited about the positive things Bagent has done, and the bad throws could just be bad throws and nothing more. But the questions about his arm strength didn’t come out of nowhere, even if they have been overblown.
I still think his arm is a bit light. I will say this. He didn’t have a QB coach at Shepard. They didn’t even have an ice tub. He should be able to improve with good coaching.
That was a fucking bullet
I hate to break it to everyone, but the most likely outcome is that both of the Bears current QB’s are going to be career back ups. Neither is all that good and neither will be the starting QB of the next Bears division winning team.
Noodle Arm /s
bUt He HaS nO aRm! 55mph velocity and I’m not a Bagent homer.
Who cares about his arm strength. A QB either has it between the ears or he doesn’t. The greats know where and when to throw the ball.
This is exactly it. Think Brady or Breese style as a Bagent comp. Could they throw the deep ball? Yes. Can Bagent? Don’t know yet. But mainly Brady and Breese sustained drives and wore down defenses. They were dink and dunkers that focused on creating momentum and getting into the right checks. Always having positive plays, make 3rd down easy and end the drive in a TD, FG or punt to flip the field. Basically, exceptional game managers. Even Mahomes just looks for Kelce most of the time through the short/intermediate portion of the field. Then he make plays when he has to just like Brady and Breese could but in a different way. The greats are always clutch.
Bagent beat a mediocre Raiders team and still has so much to prove. But the things he did in that game are the things you need to do to win in the NFL like execute the game plan, read the defense, make the correct run/pass checks, take care of the ball, make quick decisions, throw the ball accurately and get the team into tempo. He looked like a veteran in his first game as a rookie from a D2 school. But Justin has never looked like a veteran at all. Not even once. Bagent also has the gumption that an elite QB needs. It’s like he knows he’s good and he knows he has the killer instincts. Again, lots to prove but let him go out there and prove it. If things change, go back to Fields. But Bagent looks the part and it’s intriguing.
It’s incredibly hard to take any of this seriously when people like you are constantly trying to compare an UDFA D2 rookie to DREW BREES AND TOM BRADY.
its going to take awhile for a lot of the people with lower football IQ and knowledge of the nuances of the game to accept that he is good. the whole debate around him is a fascinating study into human behavior, biases and groupthink etc.
Drew Brees threw 9,421 for the saints and not 1 of those went for more than 50yrds in the Air. How did that turn out.
Chad Pennington was a guy who seemed to have it between the ears but didn’t have the arm. I think he also got hurt a lot. He still had a relatively good career.
45 yards with a running start isn’t helping him beat the rap
Throwing on the run is harder than throwing with a crow hop. And the ball would’ve traveled 50 if not caught
Seriously. Every attempt to disprove the narrative about Bagent makes me believe it even more.
I don’t know how big a difference the running start would have made
It’s why you can’t compare a fielder’s throwing velocity to a pitcher’s. Throwing with a hop/run/putting your body into it makes a TREMENDOUS difference
Check out here at around 1:03 and again at 1:58. He throws a couple of balls of around 50 air yards, no running start, not a lot of arc. They’re not huge, but they’re legit deep passes.

I think the questions about his arm are perfectly reasonable until he shows it at the NFL level, but I think the narrative is being a little overblown.
Not to mention using a smaller ball in college
I haven’t seen this before. It’s a nice throw. I love the little things he does like the jumping passes and pump fakes. Shows intelligence.
I thought Bagent looked great last week, but this video is not a good display of arm strength.
I know he’s jumping, but he lobs the ball up like he’s playing 500 in the backyard. That throw would not cut in the NFL.
