Absolutely Genius!
I started looking at the top floors first and my brain just could not process that those were numbers. Not until I started at the bottom and worked my way up.
Must’ve really screwed you up when the second one you saw was “25”.
Haha, yes this happened to me as well!
reminds me of a game I used to play

Reminds me of a Simpsons episode

Whoah, I wonder if the animator played Zillion. The Simpsons were on The Tracey Ullman show starting the same year Zillion was released.
Thank goodness.
OMG I WAS GONNA SAY THE SAME THING BUT I THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD HAVE A CLUE WHAT I WAS TAKING ABOUT!!! I’ve never met anyone in real life or online who ever heard of Zillion!
Yeah, I’ve never seen it mentioned ever either.
Funny thing is it took until I played it on an emulator to realize that the code symbols were just the numbers 1, 2, 3… mirrored. When I was a kid and first played it, I used to have names for the shapes they made Like M, Heart, 8, U, Bottle…

OMG I did the exact same thing too! Only difference is i called the first one hat, all the others i called the exact same as you. GIF: Did we just become best friends?
hat
I love it.
Well, I used to play this with my best friends. Maybe we already knew each other long ago.
TIL
Lemmy, bringing people together over obscure and otherwise thought lost knowledge since 2019.
I get all the others, but the 4 is messing with my head.
Yeah, not sure what’s up with 4
What is it called?
Someone out there has been confused because they thought they parked on the 25th level.
… because they took the elevator, right?
Or the 52nd
It pisses me off so much that 4 and 6 are backwards.
They’re not though. Read from left to right they’re oriented correctly. It’s the other floors that are backwards when read left to right
I feel like the majority orientation determines the right orientation.
Not if you look outside from within the building.
… They’re symmetrical, they look the same from both directions.
But 4 and 6 are read edge-in, and the others are read middle-out. The mirroring is inconsistent.
Yes, but looking at them from the inside wouldn’t change that.
No, each pair looks the same whether you’re viewing them while standing inside or out on the street.
To read the numbers so that they are correctly oriented, you’d read from the middle of a given pair outward for 1, 2, 3, and 5. But to read 4 and 6, you’d read from the edge inwards.
Or (viewing from outside or inside) the second number in the pair is not reversed for 1, 2, 3, and 5. The first number is not reversed for 4 and 6.
I’m perfectly aware of all of this, this has nothing to do with my comment.
Ah yes you’re right. I was thinking about the numbers individually.
Oh, very interesting point. Either way some of them are backwards which is a shame for a cool design idea like this
Yeah cool design nevertheless. Found some pictures from within, they picked one of the ‘wrong’ floors for those shots, hehe: https://www.sosbrutalism.org/cms/18741632
Unparkable
When I was a kid I used to doodle a 4 with a mirrored 4 like this and make a little spaceship. This pleases me
If you didn’t say what they represent, I’d never of guessed
These are a bit fun, but in all honesty this parking garage needs to be torn down and replaced with something actually useful
Sooooo what do you propose for all the vehicles inside of it? Parking garages are not cheap, which means there was a significant need for parking spaces.
Sooooo what do you propose for all the vehicles inside of it?
Anyone parking there has a serious surplus of money - it costs €13/hour to park there.
What they should do is to keep their cars at home and take transit like literally everyone else is doing. Mind you that this is one block from the Stockholm’s central plaza, served by Stockholm Central station, i.e the place that is best served by transit in the entire country.
Rich people vehicle storage is an exceedingly poor land use for such a place.
Parking garages are not cheap, which means there was a significant need for parking spaces.
It was built in the 60s when everyone in the country had highway psychosis. We’ve grown past the illusion that everyone should be taking their car everywhere and get to store it everywhere, especially in dense city environments.
Sooo what you’re saying is, that there is a substantially high demand for this parking, given how much people are paying for it.
You know how you actually fix this? Get people to stop needing it. Then it will be demolished because there will be no profit in it. Don’t destroy the solution without changing the need.

That’s not a warranted conclusion whatsoever.
The building is owned by the luxury warehouse NK that’s located next door. Several floors have in fact just recently been converted from parking space to other more productive uses. A complicating factor is that the building holds cultural heritage status, so NK are not allowed to completely replace it even if they so desired. I’d be willing to bet money that there are very, very few cars that park in the garage, and that NK would be more than happy to re-develop the property should they actually be allowed to do so.

Again, none of these conclusions actually follow from the facts. Luxury warehouse parking is not a solution for anything when there’s such incredibly high quality transit directly adjacent to the warehouse. The vast majority of the warehouse’s visitors are already sane enough to take transit, or even walk, to get there.
There was recently a push to make an ultra-low emissions zone in central Stockholm, which would include the entrance to this parking garage. It’s currently a matter of dispute - the left wing municipal government is pushing to implement it, and the national right wing government is continuously sabotaging the implementation. There’s only so much sabotage they can continue to do, however, and there’s good reason to believe that the ULEZ will soon be implemented, which will make even fewer cars come in to park in the garage, since they will be banned from driving to the entrance.
Oh good, so they are already converting it away from parking spots as the need wanes. I guess this conversation is already solved.
