It’s basically child porn and I’m pretty sure we and the admins don’t want to propogate that.

It’s sad that lemmy users are constantly wanting to defederate smth for one reason or another BEFORE reaching a critical mass of active users

Oh yeah because propagating child porn is alarmist and we should totally wait for it to garner more support for shutting it down.

I’m not searching for CP, so I don’t care, yet a quarter of all posts being about banning some community is worrying

What are you doing that you’re seeing so many posts about that? This is literally the first one I’ve seen in 3 days.

Frankly, I don’t know, I’ve just joined and stumbled upon tons of posts about defederating from Meta, The Donald drama, then I’ve decided to check for new post and saw this one

I agree actually. Everything is already super fragmented ultimately defeating the purpose of federation. Defederating doesn’t remove that content either, it just makes it harder to access.

it just makes it harder to access.

Not only. For CP and other possible legally risky content, Federation means violating data may be shared between instances.

Also, this is stated like it’s a negative? Are you saying this because it should be easy to access child porn?

            WTF?

That’s a strawman argument and an argument from emotion. If they’re really hosting CP, then bring down the law on them. They usually can’t because they likely aren’t hosting CP, they’re hosting content that makes you uncomfortable. I’m not for banning stuff that makes you uncomfortable, regardless of how extreme it is. Defederating just means separation, it effectively does nothing to the content itself except make it very slightly harder to access.

Wtf? Federation is a privilege, not a right. If you can’t behave, spread CP or is a hub for nazi shit, you definitely don’t deserve that privilege.

Sure, but doesn’t banning an instance because of a single “bad” community hurt the whole platform?

No. The instance should moderate its own users. When they allow users to continue abuse, the instance should be blocked. Instances that condone abusive communities hurt the whole platform.

Bruh, that’s literally how you keep yourself from ending up as a Nazi bar. You stomp that shit out and let them know they’re unwanted, or they bring their friends and eventually run off the rest of your clientele.

Having those bad communities federated is worse for the platform than defederating from instances that propagate that shit. You’re gonna run off more people if you risk getting CSAM or Nazi shit on their feed than you would be excluding instances that have it.

No. An instance that permits and hosts child porn is an inherent risk to federate with. What instance owner could want to federate with them and possibly receive / store CSAM/child porn?

Also: what instance owner wants to potentially expose their users to that type of content??? It’s globally illegal.
