People often aren’t aware that the average PC gamer doesn’t have a 5090. The majority of people are using pretty outdated hardware. And Steam are certainly in a position to know that because of the Steam survey.
I’m one of them, my Cpu and motherboard are both almost 10 years old. I updated most other parts but don’t want to mess around with those core parts in fear of damaging something.
At the moment I’m either considering finally making the jump to a new case, motherboard and Cpu with the parts I replaced over the years or I will buy a steam machine.
Same. I’m beating a 1080 within an inch of its life at this point. Some times, the system needs a hard reboot and BIOS just “forgets” that bootable devices are installed. It’s time, and that Steam Machine is looking really nice.

Back when you could get a great card for not insane money, and they never break.
Change your motherboard battery.
Cpu could be dangerous if you are not careful but video card is easy. Open case, 1-3 screws depending on old and new card, pull out, push in new card.
That said I am running a 970 so…
980 Ti. And dual Xeon 5355s.
Yeah, that’s why I replaced the video card already. From what I’ve seen, the CPU is also doable if you’re careful but definitely a lot more fragile.
Nvidia is not helping, either. What they’re charging now is bonkers.
…Intel is trying at least. Battlemage is good, it’s just inexplicably not selling well. I’d have jumped on it a heartbeat if they made a bigger card.
I think Intel’s issue is that they’re focusing on the low end. Anyone with a 3060 or better would see the b580 as a lateral move at best, or more likely a downgrade. A b770 card would probably have gotten me to upgrade as long as they weren’t stingy with the ram.

Ironically, they seemed to figure ‘low end’ is where the sales are at. Yet my guess is most ‘low end’ buyers pick Nvidia by default, and folks who are upgrading from anything aim higher than a B580.
I would’ve killed for a 512-bit Arc card (other than the unobtanium datacenter GPUs), but that’s a fever dream for now…
They focus on the low end, but a lot of people who only want low end GPUs care about Minecraft, and their OpenGL performance is abysmal, so Minecraft runs like molasses. If you play a lot of Minecraft, Nvidia’s cards manage to be much better value. There’s no reason why this couldn’t be fixed if they’re willing to invest in writing native OpenGL drivers instead of going through a compatibility player or mitigated if they invested more in making the compatibility layer faster, but that would mean deciding they’re losing a lot of sales this way, as it wouldn’t be cheap.
Still on a 1060. If I want to play something vaguely impressive looking, I’ll use my PS5.

I would be very surprised if “all games” includes titles like rainbow 6 siege and others with strict/unsupported anticheat
You can install Windows on it and should be able to play those games.
They are obviously saying that their hardware is powerful enough to play all games; not that all games support their choice of OS.
To be honest, I am a bit disappointed in the machine, its specs are very underwhelming and not exactly future proof.
I really like the idea of Steam machines and I hope they are successful though.
They have to find a price/performance ratio that most users would be satisfied with, it’s a difficult task and some one will always be left out. It’s not future proof for sure, but I am sure it will be a banger value in present(whenever it launches).
The point is that 4K TV is a lot more prevalent than 4K monitors and my understanding is that this device is targeting exactly the former audience. And this device will struggle with more demanding titles big time even with frame gen and FSR.
Again I am really hoping I am wrong here as we need more competition in the console segment. And it would be great for Linux compatibility and force more studios to create Linux ports and will be great for the overall compatibility.

It’s not made for the high end user, and as the article said, it’s better than 70%. Most people play on old hardware. It’s a perfect fit for those people
But can’t run them at 8k with every option turned up to Ultra therefore the Steam Machine is garbage and the game engines are unoptimized and the developers are lazy. /s

Only reason I can’t play certain games is the developers want kernal level anti cheat. Luckily even Microsoft is working on getting rid of that.
AFAIK MS is ramping up intrusive anti-cheat.
Why would a customer care who’s responsible. Valve marketing is misleading. If a company said their headphones work with all phones but they were using a 3.5mm jack who would be responsible?

Games with Kernel Level Anti Cheat won’t run on Linux.
It’s also quite funny what is defined as a PC? Steamdecks and Laptops are also in this category yet they are not really comparable to normal “PCs” aka Workstations/Desktop computers (nobody calls a smartphone a PC). You know something the Steam Machine targets.

You can run servers, command line/console, play games, edit videos, make music, control smart home devices and way more. In what way, are these not PC’s?
Its a pc you can still install windows if you so choose, just because it ships with linux doesnt mean thats the only thing it will run…
