  • [Google] tried unsuccessfully to have the verdict reversed, but then Epic came to the rescue. In late 2025, the companies announced a settlement that skipped many of the court’s orders.

Epic leadership professed interest in leveling the playing field for all developers on Android’s platform. But US District Judge James Donato expressed skepticism of the settlement in January, noting that it may be a “sweetheart deal” that benefited Epic more than other developers. The specifics of the arrangement were not fully disclosed, but it included lower Play Store fees, cross-licensing, attorneys’ fees, and other partnership offers.

The best option for people in other countries that believe in freedom and justice (in the true sense, not in the American polemical sense) is to get rid of all American platforms. At least in tech, there isn’t a single major US platform that’s not involved in open criminality (and even crimes against humanity) and/or have an outright malicious attitude towards customers.

Another option would be full white-labeling with transfer of regional IP (copyright, trademarks, patent - everything) and any key operational infrastructure. Essentially, the US HQ would have zero control over of the platform and would get a small fee and that’s it.

The Chinese are smart enough to use this approach in verticals that they seem somewhat strategic (one can argue fully strategic areas are simply closed off to American oligarchs).

  • All American polemics and “pledges” are BS, at least with respect to anything substantial.

Not saying it was always like this and that it will always be like that, but it is reasonable to assume there it will take another generation (20-30 years) before we see any positive developments with respect to the culture of corruption, criminality and dishonesty that has unfortunately come to dominate American society.

Doesn’t matter if a hypothetical Barack Obama II comes to power. From my time in the living in the US (several years with extensive travel across many different states), the impression I got is that on real matters an Obama is actually not too different from a Trump. The biggest difference is that Trump owns his corruption and criminality (with excellent electoral success).

Even in foreign policy, Obama de facto approved the annexation of Crimea (our new leadership asked for support to fight the russian invasion of Crimea and were rejected) and he went along to characterize russia as “a regional power making trouble with its neighbors.”

A comically stupid approach that’s not too different from Trump’s gibberish.

And if you think I am being uncharitable, ask yourself the following question:

Meta has been found to knowingly enable fraud to gain $16 B in 2024 alone. Meta was also reported to have developed a “playbook” to manage this fraudulent scheme; so the whole thing was premeditated and with clear intent.

Is anything going to happen Meta (the entity) or Meta’s leadership (be it the far right or the centre right is in power)? Anyone who has lived in the US in the last ~30 years knows the answer!

  • I’ve been buying mid-range devices since mid 2010s (Nexus 5, Xiaomi Mi A1); mid-range devices were fine then and even more so now. The one drawback was camera quality, but IMO this has been resolved. These days I stick to the Samsung A series. I bought my A73 in mid 2022 and I see no reason to upgrade (although battery charge is starting to become an issue, although it’s manageable). It’s too bad Samsung sunset the A7X series.

I can’t imagine spending more than $500 - $600 on a smartphone (and even that is pushing it past the optimal spot on the price to performance curve).
