To be fair, I think the US reaction to it might be worse than the pandemic. Probably not what they meant though.
The patriot act was enacted just 6 weeks after 9/11. The attacks were just an excuse and considering the usian media any attack that killed more that 50 people would be as workable.
All Amerikans should be immediately alarmed at the 6 week time frame, knowing that our government could never get anything done in 6 weeks alone.

The question is which had a bigger global impact, not which was worse. There can definitely be debate about that, and it will take several more years to fully understand. However, I really doubt redditors are thinking that hard about it.
In that case it could be argued that 9/11 had more impact, but it’s kinda false since 9/11 was also but a symptom and symbol. So the ultimate answer would be as usual: capitalism (specifically Usian imperialism) - hell it’s an answer for both, since if entire world implemented Chinese solution covid would be long forgotten footnote.
