I love that physical media is getting new life, but CDs are not archival in nature. It’s a drastically different problem from not owning anything, but I don’t want unreadable CDs to push people back to streaming.

I’ll also mention that a major benefit of vinyl records – despite cracks and pops and quality turntables being generally expensive – is that they are so dirt simple as to be effectively immune from similar issues. Not trying to sway opinions at all, but as physical media goes, it still exists for a reason.

Personally, I have both CDs and vinyl. And tapes!

If you read the article, you’ll see the authors of the study literally saying that not many conclusions should be drawn from it.

“In this observational work, however, it appears that xylitol has a negative long-term effect on cardiovascular events in the general population. As with all observational studies, causalities are difficult to infer, but this work shows that further studies are mandated into this societally important topic.”

This is important, because the outcome of the study is: we need more studies. It is not that xylitol has been shown to be dangerous, a jump so many comments have made.

There was an observed effect in people who had “high blood levels of xylitol”. But there were few if any other controls:

The researchers also highlighted that the association was independent of underlying factors such as body mass index, hypertension, diabetes and lipid levels, which might predispose people to low-calorie products.

It’s been known for a while that extremely high levels of xylitol can act as a diuretic, but that’s true of a lot of other things, too. That’s also not relevant here. It’s important to not jump to unwarranted conclusions until more proper studies are conducted.

It does help to reduce cavities, however. Xylitol limits acid production from fermenting bacteria, and it’s the acid which actually causes cavities (sugar, on the other hand, feeds the fermentation).

So use xylitol toothpaste if you can. You don’t swallow it, so the stomach concerns are nullified.

That’s just corporate complacency. Thankfully Google doesn’t dictate the names of things, either.

Convenience is always the driver for these things. Just be weary when the quality of the convenient option necessarily goes down. Sometimes it is that much more difficult to get back into the old pattern.

Seems like Apple didn’t get the memo as public opinion has turned on having cameras absolutely everywhere. I get that it’s for “visual intelligence”, but that’s just some marketing to try and convince people this doesn’t make you look as pervy as wearing the Meta Raybans.

I really don’t think criminalizing speech is a great idea

I don’t either, but it also isn’t a great idea to think that the speech of individuals is equal to the speech of corporations. This pollster may have swayed the outcome of an election with knowingly false statements; that should be illegal.

I see the point about needing time for real journalists to blow it open, but given the current landscape, I don’t think it’s a good idea to kick this can. What happens when the poll with fake data is released only hours before the election?

Adding an edit: I also see the point about margin of error and how it isn’t clear sometimes and it ultimately makes the polls worthless. But isn’t that a conflation or even a red herring here? If the poll is bad, it’s bad. But what we are talking about was intentionally false.

If you were to duplicate a unique Ikea design and sell it as your own, something tells me you’d have a legal issue.

Of course this is a bit different because you’re making a representation of the chair. But, it could in turn be used to replicate a chair. If you use an AI model to make a 3D representation of Ariel from the Little Mermaid, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Disney’s legal team would come after you if you tried to profit from it.

There is certainly a difference between intellectual property and other kinds. My response above assumes intellectual property, which doesn’t necessarily fit the chair example cleanly. But the point remains the same, and the distinction isn’t always relevant.
