Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think is a realistic peaceful solution to the China-Taiwan issue?
3·2 hours agoI don’t think it matters what I think. Like everyone else chiming in on this thread, I have zero expertise on the subject - so whatever I say is just my personal preferred outcome, not a realistic one.
I’m never intentionally mean to anyone - not online, not in real life. I’m not overly polite either, and I don’t hold back just to spare your feelings, but hurting people is never my goal.
I apply the same rule to people who aren’t even in the room. You’ll be hard-pressed to catch me talking shit about anyone, even the ones I don’t like.
The material doesn’t really matter there - that’s what the waterproofing membrane is for. My bathroom has a plywood subfloor with a 5 cm concrete slab cast on top, floor heating cables embedded inside it. Then there’s a waterproofing membrane painted over that, followed by the tiles. There’s even this rubber “funnel” over the floor drain that’s fully embedded in the waterproofing layer, making it virtually impossible for water to go anywhere but down the drain.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•Complaining about headlines using "X blasts/slams Y" gives boomer.English
6·21 hours agoThe downside is that it enables you to ignore every real problem in the world by just telling yourself that it is what it is. It might be good for your own sanity on the short run but it’s bad for everyone on the long run.
Why shower tray instead of floor drain?

6·23 hours agoYou could apply that same logic to everything and never complain ever again.

camping@sh.itjust.works•How do you find good campgrounds?English
4·23 hours agoIf it’s marked on a map I consider it a bad spot. I just browse terrain maps for nice looking locations and then hike there to see what it’s like in person. If there are signs of other people having stayed there in the recent months then I go somewhere else.
Admittedly I have the luxury of free to roam laws so I can camp quite literally where ever I want.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does cats (and similar animals) can live with the exact same food every day, but we (humans) need a variety of food to survive?
101·24 hours agoI’m a living proof that you can eat the same thing every day for decades and be just fine.

science@lemmy.world•AI is threatening science jobs. Which ones are most at risk?English
1·2 days agoAI is more than just LLMs. AlphaFold is an AI that figured out protein folding and it is not an LLM.
I’ll have it if you don’t want.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think that blue collar work should come under the category of skilled work?
16·2 days agoThat’s probably exclusively American term. I couldn’t ever imagine calling a tradesman an “unskilled” labourer. You’ll get a quick nosejob that way.
I’m frugal by nature. For most of my life I’ve always had enough savings to buy almost anything I want. Whenever I get a “bonus” from somewhere, I’m not even tempted to go on a spending spree - it doesn’t enable me to buy anything I couldn’t have already bought anyway. I’m way more excited about seeing the value of my investments go up than I would be about a new iPhone or whatever.
I live in an old house, wear old clothes, drive an old truck, never travel, never eat out, etc. I guess I just value different things than some other people. I’d rather be financially secure and look poor than the other way around.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Looking for YouTube channel recommendations that do video essays on religions, spiritually and mythology etc .... in an empathic and appreciative way.
1·2 days agoAlex O’connor talks a ton about religion. I personally skip those episodes but I love the others so I assume these are as good as long as you find the topic interesting which I don’t.
Even after a multiple month long break it only takes few sessions for the tolerances to get back where they were. There are many good reasons to take a break but I don’t think that reseting tolerances is one of them.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do YOU personally determine if someone is a good or bad person?
3·3 days agoI assume everyone is good untill they give me a reason to think otherwise. However, for me to know that someone truly is a good person takes years of knowing and interacting with them.
Not sure about the happy part but anti-social and high, yes.
Ads work. Consumer behavior is among the most studied phenomenoms in the world.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is something about how people view or use technology that needs to die?
41·3 days agoI hear a lot of people worrying about this being the case in the future but I don’t remember hearing anyone claiming that about our current LLMs.

I don’t think fashion is just one thing. You’re not going to find anyone promoting the way I’m dressing but I dress that way for a reason and it’s still a fashion choice. You could say I’m counter-signaling for intentionally not following current trends but that’s still just a different version of the same thing.
I’d say that a more accurate statement would be: “Following current fashion is wearing what you think others expect you to wear”
