Welcome to Round 3 of the Hot Lap Challenge
Sim: Assetto Corsa
Track: Hungaroring
Car: Lotus Exos 125
Weather: Clear
Track: Optimum
Temperature: 20.0C
Wind: 0k/m
If you do not have Assetto Corsa, please submit your times with the sim you are using, replicating the track conditions as closely as possible.
Please use the car’s default setup. You may only adjust fuel levels, tyres, TC, ABS, and Brake Bias.
You have until 13/08/2023 23:59 to submit your best lap. Please only submit times in a top level comment. If you have already submitted a lap and you improve, please edit your top level comment.
Please include a screenshot of your lap time for verification.
Rain
We were going to make this a wet weather challenge, but wet weather requires paid mods. Please let us know if you’re happy for that. We will write up a guide for this if we have a wet challenge.
Last time out
This one proved more popular! SimpleDev took the W with an outstanding lap.

If we’re doing a wet challenge I’d prefer one of the other popular sims with officially supported rain (I think ACC and AMS2 both have this). My reasoning is mostly selfish though, I spent a long time trying to get rain working in AC and eventually gave up.
Official rain is definitely a more tempting scenario having got rain working on AC!
Yeah I suspect it’s easier when not running in proton, but still. Honestly the mod situation on AC makes me nervous. I use content manager and I realize rain is developed by the same person, but there’s a ton of random, questionable quality code out there that people seem not to think twice about bolting on to the game.
That’s not to say that official game dev companies don’t do shady stuff, or don’t have poor security practices. I dunno, maybe I shouldn’t go down this rabbit hole =]
Wasn’t having too much fun with this one. The track lacked a smooth physics mesh so the distinct polygons in the track started affecting the physics. Had the challenge been with an F3 or GT3 car I would do it in ACC or iRacing instead.
Yeah I’ve barely played AC so I’m not experienced with mods too much but something about this one I could never get comfortable with.
Would make sense it’s just an individual mod thing.
Would you mind testing Suzuka to see if you have the same issue? I’d hope not, but if its bad, I’d like to know before we start the next challenge.
I’ll take a look tonight too. We can probably have users submit a link to the mod and have one of us test it out with a set car each week.
Edit: Track is fine
I drove it and seemed perfectly fine to me tbh.
It ought to have a physics mesh since they stole the whole track from ACC and converted it. I’ll opt to use another sim with a similar car if able instead of using that mod.
I’m going to run this in the dry tonight, since that seems to be where we are trending for this challenge. I’ll update this post with my screenshot asap.
There we go: 1:33.160 --> 1:32.529 --> 1:31.662
I’ll have to try to improve this coming weekend!
Edit - After giving it another go real quick I really noticed how stiff the car is. It’s so stiff that throughout many corners one of the front tires either doesn’t touch the ground or it skips across the tarmac.
While that is manageable, it’s quite difficult to get the trail braking just right. Due to the stiffness and low contact patch you end up easily locking a front tire trying to eek out that last bit of turn in. Usually I’m quite good at braking but I’m still locking up a bit multiple times a lap.
There’s definitely another second or so left on the table for myself before I start having to get sweaty lmao. It’s a tricky car to drive fast for sure!
I suggest you leave links for any mods required so people aren’t left wondering if the mod they find are legit or safe to use. On the paid mod side, I’ll be skipping challenges requiring them.
Yes, I would take that approach if we were going to ask for mods to be used, as I did below for the next challenge suggestion.
Much closer to the top than last time out, nice work!
@itsmikeyd oh nice I’ll have to give this a shot when I get home. Cheers.
Not unhappy with this for a first attempt at this car and track. Maybe I’ll give it another go this weekend.
1:31.207
Great suggestion from @Ecksell@lemmy.ml, really enjoyed this one. My fastest lap was a little untidy, but I think I’m going to stick with it.
Check out the video - this time with more editing, a proper lap timer and some very average commentary! It’s quite hard commentating on a hot lap. Something I’ll hopefully improve on over time.
Hey guys, felt I needed to apologize for not running this one since I suggested it. Life stuff happened, but Im still here for now. I hope to be able to get back in the sim and join the next challenge, and have enjoyed seeing your super quick times.
Banned lol. 😜
Hope you’re all good buddy. No problem if you can’t set a lap, that’s just life sometime!
I have probably set my last lap. But thanks, you guys keep at it
Nice lap and video! I’m not sure I’ll have a chance to put another lap in so you may end up winning this battle hah
Cheers dude! Feels like you and I are very similar in pace. Whoever wins depends on who can put the lap together and has the most time it seems.
Can someone link the version of the track we’re planning on using? The only one I found on RD was terrible and I want to make sure I’m on the right one before putting in a bunch of practice
Thanks! Could you also pin the League post? LW isn’t federating and my mod account can’t see the post
No worries. I updated the OP with the link. Have unpinned and pinned it again.
Please reply to this comment with your suggestions for the next Hot Lap Challenge. Most votes wins.
Both are free mods. I had a quick play with this the other night and it felt amazing!
How about this but with a GT3 or GT4 car? Many sims have this track so we’re not stuck with a sketchy stolen track. Also to have a break from openwheelers.
Seems a bit harsh to call a converted track sketchy by default.
Almost no mod is going to be made by hand when laser scanned track versions from reputable companies exist. In this case it happens to be converted from a track made by the same base company in the first place.
They also didn’t pass it off as their own and were forthcoming that it was from ACC.
I’ve had this discussion with people who worked on content for ACC and the takeaway was that is def not appreciated by the creators or company. They accept that rips and converts is inevitable, so it is up to each individual to consider the source and what they are morally okay with. As game artist myself I wouldn’t appreciate my own work to be used outside of the intended context, even if the source was clear.
Either way, that is why I suggested a common car and track combo that can be done without mods in other sims. I don’t care what others choose to do, now that I’ve made my stance clear.
That’s a fair enough opinion, as a developer of various crap and even more specifically specific ECU tunes used for performance events etc…I’m a bit opposite in I find it slightly annoying companies and people want to keep everything close to themselves and not share anything.
Especially if it doesn’t impact them if it’s being used on another one of their own products. But that’s just my stance.
I can see both viewpoints as equally valid.
As for the car suggestions I’m just GT3’d out, that’s all sim racing has been for the past few years hah! But I’ll drive what the people vote for regardless!
Fair enough, I can def see where those who take mods from anywhere come from. I just hope these challenges won’t rely on it too much.
Happy to keep that in mind. Feel free to put forward suggestions!
Agreed, I’m all for some variability in what sim and cars we use!
Yeah, I suggested an open wheeler as I’ve done nowt but GT3 for the last few months too. If other people suggest them and it gets voted for, then I’ll race it for sure!
Oh man, yes please.
Discovered an official Fun Cup car mod for AC. That mixed with a classic British or BeNeLux track such as Brands or Zandvoort would make a nice challenge.
I’ll be posting the next challenge tomorrow, reckon you should post that in there too. Indy or GP layout at Brands?
GP has more track to it, so whynot that.
Ok, Follow up to my last question, is anyone else getting a horrible bumping/skipping though 1-2-3? My wheel is trying to rip my hands off to the point it’s almost undriveable. So far a 1:36.277, but maybe that’ll improve when I get the physics sorted out
No, not at all. Feels very flat and smooth to me.
Definitely something going on then. I installed through content manager and everything seems to be pretty low detail. Wonder if that’s the issue. The screenshots look significantly better than the track installed
It’s just not a quality track. They didn’t include a separate physics mesh that are usually far higher resolution than the track you see. You feel each individual polygon in some places like the braking zone after the bridge.
I thought it looked pretty basic in areas, but then I’m playing in VR on a Rift CV1 and so everything looks pretty low detail.
I do find that a lot of AC screenshots look significantly better than what I’m playing. Goodness knows what some people have installed.
Yeah I noticed it was quite skippy feeing in a few areas as well, almost like the car is way too stiff or something.
Manageable but interesting to drive around for sure!
It feels almost like the contact patch is skipping over the track surface. I know the track isn’t this bumpy since the iRacing version is super smooth through those corners.
I just did a few more laps and you’re exactly correct, the tire is indeed skipping (if it’s not entirely off the ground) going around multiple corners due to the overall stiffness.
Makes for a tricky car to drive!
That explains my wheelbase trying to rip my arms off
I might not get a better lap in because of it
