Obviously, we won this game because our Defense played amazing. D-line, Linebackers, and secondary all played lights out. Eberflus is an idiot, but didn’t cower in the final minutes of the game like he did against detriot and called a good defense.

My question is, if Eberflus gets fired, what do we do with the coordination of the defense? I know some people have thrown the idea of demoting Flus to DC but has that ever happened in the history of the league? To me its either he stays or goes with no in between.

Do you think we keep the Tampa 2 style since it’s worked out the past couple weeks? Who would you want as our DC if we do switch to a new staff, and what scheme do you want them to call?

If we do move on from Eberflus, I personally would want an Offensive Minded Coach. If we keep Justin, then hey, let’s give the guy a full coaching staff that can help unlock what Getsy has clearly failed to do, with the guy at the top having a clear idea of how offenses are created. If we draft a new Qb, all the more reason to. But that leaves the DC spot all the more interesting, especially with how good they’ve played recently.

people need to stop calling Eberflus an idiot. he isnt. he’s likely more accomplished than 90% of people. i dont think he’s good enough to be the HC of an NFL team but saying shit like that is dumb

He’s a good to very good DC who likely lacks the chops to be an effective HC outside of an ideal situation

I mean, generally, sure, he’s not an idiot if you compare him to everyone. It takes a lot of mental talent to even get into the nfl, let alone make it to the top, and I don’t doubt he knows the technical ins and out of football.

My point is that all the qualities of a smart head coach you’d want to see, he lacks in.

Time Management: Awful, many examples throughout his tenure Penalties: Top 5 in NFL this year Situational Awareness: Awful, see Detriot game Media Presence: Embarrassing! Guy cannot answer questions without getting lost in his own words. Hirings: Obviously, Luke Getsy is not the guy. But hiring a guy who is now under investigation from the FBI is still a terrible knock.

Smart NFL coaches are made by these factors, and when he lacks these qualities time and time again, it’s fair to call them out. We are constantly mocked by NFL announcers, reporters, and analysts for the product on AND off the field. To do that takes true incompetence. In layman’s terms, being an idiot

This is a sport. Like all sports this is our escape from reality and naturally sports fans are obnoxious and hyperbolic at times and there is nothing wrong with that. And stop trying to guilt trip fans for criticizing a millionaire who gets payed to fuck up everyone’s Sunday.

My take: Eberflus has done a decent job with the defense after getting healthy and adding Sweat. But he’s the Head Coach and not the DC. He takes responsibility for the entire team, not just the defense. So, IMO he should go for the crap offense, the penalties, game management, lack of accountability, and throw in mysterious coaches being fired…

I could maybe see him sticking around with a different OC if they decide to keep Fields. If they draft a QB I think they HAVE to go with an entire new staff. The argument if which way to go has been had, so won’t get into that here…

And you’re correct, no one is going to take a demotion nor would a new HC want that in his new staff.

DCs today are a little easier to come by with the push for offensive head coaches. We don’t have to stick with a pure Tampa 2 style either. 4-3 base of any type is fine (and honestly don’t think a switch to 3-4 would be that difficult either) as our DBs our fairly solid in Man if that’s how we want to go.

Thank you. This was a great answer. It’s good to hear that DCs should be relatively easy to find.

This season also seems really defensively dominant with guys like Mahomes, Hurts, etc, seemingly taking a step back in terms of on field production.

Hopefully, that’s a sign of new defensive philosophies being made by Defensive staffs and we can scoop up one of those talents

Y’all realize we were playing a team led by a QB that wasn’t on the roster the first time we played them a month previous?

Oh I haven’t forgotten. The bears defense gave up 25+ points to opponents in 14 consecutive games before the commies game, and then did it again with Chargers and Lions. But we clearly have good players on this defense. I just want to see them keep it up and have the right guy to develop them.

Your ignoring the other awesome defensive game the Bears had against that great Panthers team. Or against the model of stability, the Raiders.

The Bears defense has 4 games where they where they posted positive EV and it was against the Vikings x2, Panthers and Vegas.

That’s funny I was just looking at some defensive rankings through 12 games.

    • Bears are 3rd in the NFL now in interceptions
    • 1st in rushing yards allowed per game
    • 1st in yards per carry allowed at 3.4 ypg
    • Top 5 in rushing TDs allowed
    • 12th in forced fumbles
    • 10th in total yards allowed per game
    • Still bottom 5 in points allowed per game
    • Also last in the NFL in sacks despite not having a bye week yet.
    • Bears have recorded 2 or more sacks in every game sweat has started so far outside of the Saints game. Also were top 10 in pressure generated against Lions and Vikings OLs which are both considered top 5-10 groups.

Players signed next year. (or assumed)

    • Edge Sweat, Walker, DRob
    • DT Billings, Dexter, Pickens
    • LB Edwards, Edmunds, Sanborn, Sewell
    • CB Jaylon, Stevenson, Gordon, Smith
    • Safety Brisker Jackson Hicks.

I think we could easily pay a Danielle Hunter or Chase Young or even. Bryce Huff, draft or pay another DT for the rotation, cut Eddie, sign a Geno Stone type and draft a guy and have a top 10 defense. Easy to see foundations being built on both sides with key pieces at premium positions.

Yeah man, tons of people don’t realize this is a long term rebuild and we’re still sowing seeds.

And holy shit, I just realized that our defense is structured to capitalize on the weakness of the QB position league wide.

There’s no chance he will be demoted to DC. He’s going to be fired. As for what they should do going forward? It’s hard to say who will be available but they should look to run defensive scheme that best fits the players they invested heavy draft capital and money into

It’s not a good idea in practice, but in theory if they hired something like a co-headcoach, who will be responsible for the offensive side of the ball, it could be a good way to keep the positives and address the negatives of this staff.

Eberflus would still man the DC position, but would also work with the player development part of the job, while the other guy could revamp the offense and be more aggressive than Eberflus is right now.

It won’t happen, but it would be a ballsy move.
