I sometimes interact with things only as references. I saw Darmok when it aired initially and thought the whole thing was preposterous. How are you going to manage a space faring civilization with mythological metaphors and not verbs? So I just sat down to watch it again, and while I have an emotional appreciation for it, it still seems ridiculous.
What if they have a weak hive-mind data link that operates at a low enough level in the brain’s consciousness that they aren’t aware of it? It could transmit orders from captain to crew like “turn left now” and “fire phasers” in such a way that they think those commands come from their own subconscious. The captain would take for granted that his crew seems to have the ability to predict what he wants them to do next (until they fuck up). The verbal component of their communication would be reserved for higher level abstractions that set the context in which the rest of the communication subsystem navigates.
This isn’t radically different from us. Your boss sets context by saying “we’re meeting with company A (or B) at 2pm today” and you immediately know to bring your laptop and take notes with company A and to remain tight-lipped about production schedules with company B. You know these instructions not because your boss is a sophisticated communication android, but because he’s a stupid animal who got mad at you last time you didn’t bring your notes or shared information he didn’t want shared.

You would know he got mad, but how would you know he got mad because you didn´t bring notes? Or because you shared information? “Bilbo outside the Shire without his hankerchief.” “Juliet and Ethel Rosenberg in Springfield.” ?
And how would you ever communicate what actually happened at Tanagra? How would the next generation of children know what happened? Maybe they watch a lot of television.
I mean, I get how this works once someone already knows the language, but how would they learn it? The language itself isn’t functional enough to teach it, so, yeah, maybe there´s telepathy or Netflix or something.

Oh yeah. I learned long ago how much weirdness to open up around normal people. I almost lose my mind when I find someone who plays the games or listens to music I do or whatever. I can find all those people in spades on the internet. That’s why I’m here on lemmy lol.
I think it is largely just weird attracts weird here, but some of it is just that you’re talking to a much larger group of people. Maybe 100 people will read your comment. When’s the last time you said something out loud that 100 people would hear?

I mean. star trek is not all that obscure. But yeah I drop references all the time and get giddy when someone picks up on it.
People know Star Trek exists, but there are references more obscure than others. I used to hang out with “normal people” who just were sort of aware TOS existed at one point. There needs to be an intersection of two traits: watching SF, and remembering what you watched. My current gf won’t catch references to a movie we watched the day before, bless her heart.
