I expected the day after Trump stole the election that the world would issue sanctions on US. When the US started indirectly supporting a genocide in Palestine, I was sure economic sanctions would come. When we directly committed war crimes in the gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, and Iran, my mouth was wide open as nobody did anything. When we targeted ICC judges, still nothing.
Guys, boycotting US isn’t enough. Trump had never had popular support. Almost all of US hate him here. The US is a rogue terrorist state without a democracy. We need international solidarity and sanctions to end this tyranny.
Please, sanction the US until we eliminate the electrical college single party system and establish Parliament with as many parties as Canada had at your debates, and rank choice voting. That will end this fascism.
It is so incredibly frustrating and embarrassing to be a us citizen right now.
We had a brief reprieve in the Biden years, but pretty much ever since 2015 it’s been this way for me.
I always knew conservatives were way worse than the likes of David Brooks like to pretend they are. I grew up in a rural area, very very red, years before donnie came along. I moved out after college. But prior to that, I lived every day, surrounded by The Tribe That Rubs Shit In Their Hair, with very few exceptions.
And even I was surprised by them going for the washed-up never-was and complete con-man that is donnie. Pretty much anyone that was paying attention at the time knew he was an asshole back in the 80s and 90s. Hell, he’s featured prominently as someone to worship by the protagonist in American Psycho. That’s no accident, and that book was written in 1991.
Even I thought the rubes might not go for this effete fake “businessman” that has a lengthy hair-and-makeup routine and is mostly known for trying to climb the social ladder as a Manhattanite…but nope, they were completely fooled by this guy. Probably because of the racism.
This country has gone from one embarrassment to another during his two failed terms, though.
At this point I’ve come to understand that he enables their racism and that is all that matters to them. The world could burn, but as long as they could let their racism feel accepted they’ll do whatever it takes.
I think you are right. I saw them absolutely besides themselves over “PC” back in the early 90s. And then I saw their bullshit grievances reach fever pitch when they bitched and whined about conservatives being “censored” or “cancelled” in more recent years - lol, yeah, right. And then they cheered when Elon bought Xitter for the “free speech”, roftlmao.
But they really just want to be able to say the n-word. To tell racist jokes again, in public and without anyone giving them side-eye. I’m sure they were positively giddy when Pete Hegseth used the word tr__y.
But this really, really, really seems to be the primary motivator for them, and none of them have ever really been “censored” or “cancelled”.
Oh, it was definitely the racism and mysogeny. “He says it like it is, just like me!” While at the same time Donnie is whining about immigrants, Muslims, eating dogs and cats, etc.
It’s never not been embarrassing. As a Native American I get asked questions like “do you live in a teepee?” The portrayal by white Americans of their fellow citizens to the rest of the world has been a profound source of embarrassment for my entire life, just as one for instance.
Well I can say “Lake America” is not going down well with indigenous in my area…or anyone, really. The guy just doesn’t know when to stop.

As a canadian, yep. Can’t say my shopping has got any harder or more expensive because of avoiding US made products.
The grocery stores around here rarely have produce from the US anymore - not that we were buying it. Funny thing, after they started bringing in produce from other countries, the prices came down.
Suits me just fine.
I’ve got four grocery stores in town. Two are owned by Canadian companies, two by American companies.
I shop at three of them (two US and one Canadian) but pretty much just buying the marked down 50% off meats and veggies.
When given a choice I will buy the Canadian produce even if it is more.
I won’t shop at the fourth place because the markup is so high even markdown goods are more expensive. The owner is a giant asshole, I used to work for that company in my teens and avoid it as much as possible.
Wait until donnie the dotard gets a load of this. He’s gonna get out his sharpie and scribble more shit on maps and executive orders about how he’s “renaming” things.
Maybe he’ll threaten sending ICE into Canada to tackle and kidnap people who aren’t buying American goods.

Harder, but not impossible. I canceled apple music, Amazon prime, Netfilx, audible, and Youtube premium. The hardest thing to replace has been audible, but I go to the library more.
Edit: i also canceled NYTimes for the Guardian and the Atlantic for the Walrus.
I don’t know where it’s operated out of, but I use libro.fm instead of audible. You can download the audiobooks you purchase so you get a drm free copy, but they do also have a subscription model. An added bonus is that some of the profits are donated to libraries. I believe you maybe can specify which library your money goes to.
Even if it’s US based, at least there’s that benefit.

I have exactly 0 subscription services and the only apps I’ve ever paid for was to directly support independent developers (some of that’s been facilitated by google play, but even that’s been less and less over the years).
That was before we collectively said ‘fuck America’ and started actively seeking non-american solutions.
Our house gave them all up.even socials for our small buisness. Fuck em. We will find another way.
I hope Canada goes so far as to seeking other countries to import from and export to, where possible, as part of this uncalled for and needless trade war.

It sucks that it took Trump’s shenanigans to do this, but Canada is a big place and should be reasonably self-sufficient. Someone else already said tech is going to be hard to source. I thought I heard that Canada was dealing with China for some tech, so you could build a computer and put Linux on it. While the Linux distro might be built by an American or a European, it’s not sold for profit, so you’d just be using it. If there’s a Canadian distro, I don’t know. Sorry, I’m a Mac user and quite happy with my Macs. But if I were forced to use an Intel/AMD machine, I would 100% be a Linux user. I don’t care for Microsoft at all (except for gaming, they’re the slightly lesser evil between them and Sony).
OpenBSD is Canadian, but it also isn’t Linux.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember Microsoft giving Trump chunks of gold as a gift and flowing a ton of money his way like Apple has. Apple has been pretty blatant with their Trump bribes.

Quite a bit to choose from: Arch is Canadian, and two very nice and user-friendly derivatives are Dutch and German, respectively: EndeavourOS and Cachy. Debian is “global” - no headquarters, with contributors from all around the world. Ubuntu is backed by British-based company. OpenSuSE is German, with Swedish financial backing.
I think the takeaway here is that Linux isn’t the work of just one person, even Linus Torvalds. So to expect an entirely Canadian Linux isn’t really the goal — it should be enough that Canadians are working on Linux, it’s being contributed to by lots of people.
I’m sorry, I don’t mean to move goalposts or seem like I’m pulling the football out from Charlie Brown’s kick… I suppose I was wrong to ask after a “Canadian Linux” in the first place, when the point of Linux is international collaboration without a mega corp in any one region profiting. Though, some companies do profit from Linux (e.g. Red Hat, I think that’s American), the end-user doesn’t pay for it.
Having a huge variety of distributions does allow you to be more selective though, based on whatever criteria is important to you. Re: RedHat - they are now an IBM subsidiary, so yeah- rather US-based.
Its the absolute least you can do. Everyone can atleast avoid some US products.

The only made in us products I buy are food, and that’s because I live in statesia. Also musical instruments and that’s because some musical instruments are made nowhere else.
