Once I was just cleaning my watch and it started calling emergency services, but I stopped it in time (I think)
The first night I got my AW S9 I wanted to just shut it off, because it was charged up and I didn’t want to wear it for sleep tracking. So, at like 2:30AM I, half-asleep, tried figuring out how to shut it down for the first time.
I discovered that the shutdown process on AW is very similar to Wear OS watches - just going into Settings > General > Shut Down… The only problem is that, while on Wear OS there is a slider you have to swipe to confirm shutdown, but on AW that slider is instead for Emergency Call (and the power button is just a tiny on screen button you have to press). Well, I swiped out of habit before even reading.
I hit hang up the moment I saw that it triggered a call, thought that maybe I prevented it from going through, but then my phone started ringing literally like 2 seconds later. I knew ignoring the call would probably lead to EMS at my door, so I answered and just said “sorry, my mistake, new apple watch” and the nice lady on the other end already knew what I meant.
Not the button but my husband experienced atrial fibrillation while I was away. He passed out and fell, his Apple Watch called 911, and the ambulance showed up. Awesome!

Yes! And I’m pretty sure a lot of hospital staff went out and got themselves an Apple Watch—it was even announced on morning rounds to the residents.
I have not… I would be worried about the potential fine and jail time for making a frivolous emergency call. Yeah, I will probably just get a warning but I know there are potential penalties.
A few months ago, I was changing watch bands on my Ultra. The band was sticking and I gave it a wrench and it decided to let go easily. My watch flew across the room, hit the wall and went behind the sofa.
By the time I could retrieve it, it was dialing 911 because I didn’t respond to the ‘Did you fall’ prompt quickly enough. I tried to kill the call but I knew it wasn’t going to work, so I dialed 911 again and told the operator that I may just have called in error. He laughed when I told him what happened, but told me he was required to send a car anyway. I got him to agree with no sirens and lights. (It was almost midnight).
I met the car in my driveway, and finally convinced the cop it was an accident. I know he wanted to search my house, hoping to find a crime.
I am more careful now, but it’s still good to know that I fell down a flight of stairs, that someone would come
that’s interesting that they were still required to send out a cop car. there was another story in this post comments about accidental 911 call, and the person managed to convince a dispatcher not to send out any vehicles. now if this was a real emergency and i was threatened to say that nothing happened, I’d appreciate it if the dispatcher sent out a cop car anyways
From their perspective, it could have been my wife trying to call because I was beating her with a baseball bat
I wiped out on my bike and after I gathered myself to run back home from embarrassment (as I fell in front of some couple) I had to quickly stop my watch from calling 911.
My watch did this while I was on a roller coaster. Came off to a lot of missed calls. Caught it just before it dialed emergency services.
I was juggling everything trying to get out of a conference room. My phone started the whoop whoop thing and I managed to get it to stop but not before I got a call back from Seattle Police. The worst part is that I worked for a major corporation with in-house security and fire department so you weren’t supposed to call 911 on site since we had an internal emergency number. Whoopsie daisy.
Got hit by a car and knocked to the ground on my bike. Didn’t get knocked out but pretty banged up.
Stood up to my watch doing a countdown for an emergency call. I cancelled it but pretty cool to see my trusty S5 still detects a big fall.
I use it every so often on my watch by accident when my hands are wet. I typically get it to hang up right after the timer runs down and so far no one has showed up to rescue me.
I was at universal Orlando on the Hagrid’s the motorbike adventure ride. When I got off I realize my watch was calling 911! I had to immediately stop the call cuz clearly there wasn’t any emergency! I think it triggered from that drop track that’s in the last segment of the ride so it thought that I was in a car crash! If you’re unsure what I am talking about, go YouTube the pov of the ride!
Slipped on some ice and landed straight on my ass. I knew how to fall so I didn’t hit my head but it was very cartoonish. I heard my watch go off and I was able to stop it in time but I appreciated it.
I accidentally did. It was early morning, and I didn’t have my glasses on, I wanted to shut off my watch and saw the slide prompt, I thought it was the slide to shut off, but nope. Got a quick call back and had to confirm I was not having an emergency.
I did once after noticing a car crash happened in front of me. it was an instant reaction. i was so shocked by my reaction, I couldn’t stop telling the story to people, dismissing the on the actual crash and putting the spot light on using the emergency button.
