Assuming we hire a young offensive coach, we will need an experienced defensive play caller - which will consist of fired HCs and DCs (likely won’t have an up and coming DC. A lot of fired HCs end up as defensive coordinators: Dan Quinn, Brian Flores, Vic Fangio, Rasheed Morris (interim), Steve Wilks (interim), Jack Del Rio (lol).
Candidates: Belichick (no shot), Brandon Staley (runs a 3-4), Ron Rivera (intriguing), Todd Bowles (not sure he gets fired), Jack Del Rio (lol)
Bill Belichick
If you think Eberflus is bad. Do not bring in Staley.
Leslie Frazier would be my choice for DC.
Someone that doesn’t run an outdated scheme and actually knows how to put players in a position to succeed.
Don Fangio
I know 43 & 34 schemes are interchangeable in the league now but I’d prefer somebody with more of a 4-3 background considering our personnel.
Rivera & Frazier would be good IMO. Both are highly respected former Bears that have a ton of experience & can help a new/young HC if needed. They’d bring some stability like Fangio did with Nagy.
Rivera and Bowles would be my choice of fired HC turned DC. Bowles has proven to be a great DC and the last time Rivera was our DC we went to a super bowl so theres that lol. I want no one from the Cover 2 coaching tree.
It’d be great to get Riverboat Ron back! Todd Bowles would also be a good hire IMO.
Mike Zimmer if he’s receptive to a DC position. He’d also pair well with a young, offensive minded head coach since he could run that entire side of the ball.
Furthermore, Zimmer would be able to help Poles identify talent in the draft, something that I think Eberflus and Co. have struggled with for their scheme. Shit on Fox all we want, but he was crucial in getting some of that good defensive talent early-on during the Pace regime.
Fuck it, I’ll coach the defense
One of older washed out defensive HC Types. That has always felt like the magic sauce. Is wade phillips still breathing? Lol
I don’t think Dennis Allen is gonna get fired, but if he does I would be all over him
Personally, I don’t like any of the options you mentioned either than Bill or Bowles, and I don’t think either of those happens. Staley’s defense has been an absolute failure with the Chargers, del Rio’s defense has hardly worked ever since he took the Raiders HC job, and Rivera seems out of touch with the way the game has been changing (which is pretty evident when you watch his press conferences). I think our best bet really is to take an assistant from a defense that has been succeeding for multiple years.
