Because all time greats are excellent at obscuring flaws within a system. Bill is one of the best we’ve ever seen at coaching defenses so the DC cannot be gauged objectively and Brady similarly cloaked offensive ineptitude for years.
Not all that surprising that an organization that was effectively a two person brain trust has failed to bear successful fruit.
My favorite part about Brady hiding the flaws of his offense was that his Left Tackles would always be premium free agents, and then be huge disappointments. Him being able to get the ball out extremely quick made his Offensive Line look fantastic
Average 16.21. In a league of 32 teams the patriots were defensively average during bradys tenure
He was decent as a DC but i wouldnt say he’s some amazing defensive coach that just blows everyone away. He wasnt ever the best defensive coach in any era he coached in. The pats offense regularly outpaced the defense, even in the early years when they were allegedly carrying brady and the offense
Something else that needs to be considered is how these numbers compare to other coaches in general. The article highlights that four of the ten have a winning percentage of 38% or less, but that doesn’t seem that far off from coaches in general. The good ones stick around, the rest have 2-5 year stints and are fired, and I feel like a 38% winning percentage would be right in line with a typical head coach’s career

They also are not counting the mountain of success his coaching tree has produced in the college ranks
And by “all time greats,” we mean Tom Brady, because he was covering this shit coaching for a decade-plus.
Not where I thought you were going after the first sentence. The all time great obscuring flaws was always Brady.
Or because they get hired by shitty teams
This is the answer. And also why former patriot players can still succeed as coaches (Vrabel, KOC, maybe Mayo).
By all time great here, you mean Tom Brady right?
