I saw a good offer for a used ssd, and I wonder if the SMART data can be spoofed.
Yes SSD SMART data can be reset. I wouldn’t buy used SSDs as they’re more risky than HDD since they have finite amounts of write before failure.
Care to share the offer? Any SSD offered should come with SMART report/screenshot or at least with “written”.
Besides, there are some very good SSD that have TBW like 2PB/TB, unlike the average gamer crap that hardly make 300 rewrites.
You didn’t understand what I am asking. The ad has a smart report, that’s not my question though and they agreed for me to check the SMART info myself
But can SMART DATA be hacked, spoofed, manipulated?
Is SMART data reliable, is protected?
If it was tampered then how would I know? Will Samsung magician software detect it?
I can’t seem to find an answer online
Oh, sry, thought it was sufficiently answered by others. I am sure it can be reset. Just not sure how easy that is. I vaguely remember seeing such software at HDD oracle.
Figuring out spoofed data might not be so easy though (I doubt happy-happy-joy-joy-software like Samsung magician can). Perhaps doing one complete write can show some deficiencies (my experience is that it suffers with higher TBW).
PS: Sry for slightly off topic but what kind of SSD are you talking about? Some bad ass data center or just regular gamer WORM?
4tb samsung evo, I changed my mind.
I will wait until I have enough for a new ssd.
I am really shocked that there is no tech youtuber, forum, or news website that talked about an incident where scammer spoofed the tbw.
Thanks for the reply

Yes, quite sad (but perhaps it’s just a common enough thing yet). Those “tech news” people are consistently jerks and hype any news speeds (PCIe 3/4/5) over TBW and reliability.
Pardon me for being so blunt but marketing whores would be the correct term ;)
I also just found out that I can’t backup android phones, it is so easy with iphones.
That saddens me
Try NeoBackup if you don’t trust google.
Backing up iphones is much easier due to the limited hardware/functionality ;p
I want local back up and full like iPhone which it doesn’t support
Smart data is able to be cleared/reset. When you buy a used drive from reputable companies like serverpartdeals they’ll almost always show up with less than 100 power on hours as they’ve had them recertified by the manufacturer and after doing so reset smart. I don’t think you can do it natively via sata and need to use something like an rs232 to usb adapter with another physical interface. I could be wrong about exactly how it’s done/the hardware needed, but it can be reset.
Yes
Buy new, avoid potential risks!
