The trade deadline was boring and lame- more exciting than it was a few years ago though. Last year’s was electric.
Commanders
Why did they trade away both their young edge rushers? I get trading away one, you don’t wanna pay both- but is chase young really worth like pick 100 to you?
Running Backs
The ravens reportedly tried to trade for Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs, and were refused by both teams. The titans didn’t want to trade Henry and the raiders wanted a 2nd for Jacobs. Saquon was never for sale. My question is why does the league value running backs highly in trades when none of them are getting paid beyond franchise tags. All 3 of these teams suck and were sellers anyway.
Wide Receivers
The raiders not trading away Renfrow was weird, and Adams clearly wants out too- but it makes sense they didn’t want to trade him because of his contract, seems like more an offseason thing. That being said, it’s also super weird that teams weren’t trading for wide receivers.
The Giants paid Daniel Jones and didn’t trade away Saquon, why not invest and get him a good weapon.
The Chiefs wide receivers are awful, and they’re obviously a contender- it makes no sense to not at least try to get a reliable pass catcher.
I’m pretty confident Mac Jones sucks but they should at least try to get him a good weapon
The Panthers were rumored to be trying before the deadline- and I think they made the right choice not to, although it’s kinda weird they didn’t trade Brian Burns.
Other weird things:
Jaylon Johnson’s trade request was weird for multiple reasons, like why would the bears not pay him, and why was he unable to find a suitor?
Danielle Hunter not getting traded, the Vikings are done- and according to albert breer they wanted a top 60 pick. Very strange a team was unwilling to give up a 2nd and maybe some change for Hunter.
The dolphins not being buyers. Idk what they need even, I’m just surprised they didn’t do anything since they’ve been extremely aggressive lately. Not necessarily a bad thing, in fact it’s probably good.
Cowboys and Lions not being more aggressive was also weird, the NFC is very top heavy- and in order to have a shot at winning they should’ve gotten more pieces imo. Bengals not making trades is also dumb but they just don’t that type of thing. Also surprised the browns weren’t aggressive.
Now keep in mind when I talk about aggressiveness, I’m not plugged into every team. The Ravens were trying to make moves but nothing ever materialized, idk if that happened with the above teams.

The Jaylon Johnson thing isn’t that weird. He wanted to set the market for CBs apparently and the Bears said if you can find a market for that go for it. He then fucked around and found out he wasn’t worth anywhere near what he was asking for. Now the Bears get to go back to the table with him and renegotiate.

We are way more than a receiver away from being competitive, and while we did pay Jones we can get rid of him as early as next offseason.
Young is injury prone and their defense was still bad despite having both Young and Sweat. They are wanting to rebuild for the future. Sweat is a win now player.

I think it has less to do with teams not being aggressive and more about teams not willing to part with their blue chip players. Half the league is floating around 0.500 and as a result may not think punting the season is justified.
People here are overvaluing Young A LOT. Imo I think he is a really good player and will be a top 10 DE. There will be a TON of hindsight bias to this depending on whethter he does good or bad, but this was a fair trade.
Problem is, he has missed a ton of games due to injury and he needs a contract well over 20 mill per year. He probably will demand top 5 DE money which is insane for the production he has shown. That type of pay goes to a guy who has performed at an All pro level which young hasn’t been even close to while playing on a top tier Dline. Paying anything above a 3rd was never worth it. Crazy that people thought he would go for a first.

Chase Young isn’t damaged goods. But he has question marks.
Getting him for a third is a steal and makes all the sense in the world for San Francisco. They’re all in.
Word on Jaylon is he is expecting top 5 money and he hasnt been that type of player. He wants closer to $20m a season, but him being around #10 corner, I believe Poles offered around $16m a year. (this is all just from reports that have popped up)
Poles gave his agent permission to seek a trade. Word is that while the bears received some offers, the contract money Jaylon was asking for is waaaaaaaaay out there and not at all close to what he deserves.
I assume some of the teams probably offered 4th rounders or something in hopes to knocking some sense into him about his contract requirements.
Tbh, unless you have a source for those numbers, we still don’t know his asking price and everyone else’s offers. It could very well have been that he wanted top 10 money, but teams valued him, currently, as a top 15 or top 20 corner. The difference there is almost $10m per year.
I think the Bears will value JJ quite a bit more b/c he is a leader, but we also have to be realistic that he’s been injured every season and inconsistent (he was the 67th graded corner in 2022) until his 6 games this season.

Most of these things are pretty straightforward if you’re actually familiar with the situation. For example the JJ trade was requested by the player and the team’s asking price was reportedly ridiculous, so it’s not that “they don’t want to pay him” it’s that he wants out of the dumpster fire. The Vikings traded for a QB and clearly believe they can be a wild card team, so trading Hunter makes no sense for them. Chase Young is not nearly the player that Reddit seems to think he is, they didn’t give San Fran some kind of discount, they were the highest bidder.
The odds of a GM or coach doing something that makes total sense is 10-20%. That’s probably their hit rate too. So why not just do nothing i guess.
It was just a boring ass deadline this year.
