He has made 72mil already. Another 38mil is not worth my neck. He can do plenty with 72 to make more money without football.

It’s not about the money though. Football’s all he’s known and what he loves. He won’t want to walk away. There’s a reason so many players go until they just physically can’t recover enough between games to continue.

Then there’s the adrenaline. I used to play in front of a few people and it’s exhilarating. It’s addictive. Walking away out of choice is tough if you could still play and the adrenaline of game day is very hard to replace.

Then there’s the institutionalisation. These players have had the safety of a crystal clear aim and structure over their adult life. It’s scary to move away from that too.

      Depends on the contract.

Alex smith came back I swear just to spite Dan Snyder. While on injured reserves they get a portion of the game check, which is more than they would get if they retire. If you are going to go through a long rehab anyway you might as well do it while getting paid. Sure you aren’t getting another contract but you might as well get as much of your contract as you can.

I can’t find the article, but in one interview Alex Smith said one of the biggest reasons he came back was he tells his children “if you set your minds to it and work hard, you can do anything” and he saw his rehab as necessary to prove that to them.

You should be getting your full game check. All contracts are injury garunteed in the NFL. The only thing you’d miss would be performance incentives but those are in the minority.

You can argue that, but knowing what we know about football players I think it is more likely to assume he will at least return for 2024 and the rest is TBD.

Stafford has a spinal condition as well and is at quite the risk in case he reinjures it. He also decided not to retire before his option bonus cashed this year.

Really nobody but Andrew Luck ever walked away from that type of guaranteed money.

It’s not even just about money. Football is all these guys know. It’s been their whole life. Not easy to just walk away, even if paid.

Didn’t Teddy Bruschi have like a stroke and was told to never play football again by doctors but he did? I honestly can’t remember exactly, it’s been a while.
