This discourse has gotten old very quick. If you want someone to put this Bagent-Fields BS to bed with rationale and reason, read on - I’m that dude.

Just because some fans want to see more from Tyson Bagent before they crown him as the savior, they’re being labeled “Bagent haters.”

First off, there’s no such thing as a true Chicago Bears fan who is a “Bagent hater.” They are just rational fans who want a bigger sample size, and maybe they believe (with good reason) that Fields has been dealt a terrible hand by our organization before this year so they still believe in his talent and want to make sure Bagent can truly eclipse that talent weekly.

The Raiders played so shitty last Sunday that I didn’t learn a ton about Bagent other than he makes quick decisions and he’s capable of being a solid game manager.

It was impossible to learn more because the Raiders blow and Josh McDaniels is so up his own ass that he doesn’t realize that AARP member Brian Hoyer can’t lace Aidan O’Connell’s cleats whether it’s preseason or not.

Point is, routine game managers don’t get promoted to franchise QB status. That’s not how the NFL works in 2023. Hell, it didn’t work that way in 2009 when game managing savant Kyle Orton was here either. That’s why we dealt him for Cutler.

Can Bagent earn that franchise status? Sure! But why the hell would I bank on that right now? It makes no sense without more evidence.

I want to see Bagent go deep when it’s available and stretch the field to keep the defense honest. I want to see Bagent face in-game adversity and see how he responds. I want to see how well he can move the offense down the field if our run game gets stuffed. I want to see if he can win the game off his arm or legs or both when the defense allows 24+ points like they did for 14 straight games with Fields at the helm until a few weeks ago.

Why is there something wrong with that…? If Bagent aces those tests, I’m all in on QB1 Bagent! But if he’s limited in certain regards, then that’s okay too. I think no matter what he will be a great backup for us long-term, which is extremely valuable.

This weird Civil War among the fanbase is silly as hell, when literally all of us can make the smartest, healthiest decision - to let it play out and see what happens.

I’m a little disappointed in your post because I thought you’d address a problem I’ve seen recently in the fandom.

Unfortunately, some fans simply aren’t fans of the Chicago Bears. They are fans of a particular player, and don’t really care much for the team. These are quite frankly undesirables as far as I consider them.

A true fan would want both Fields AND Bagent to succeed. There is room for 2 QBs on this team and to root against one of them to support “your guy” is ludicrous and extremely selfish. These fans need to find themselves another team because they aren’t rooting for the Chicago Bears.

That said, I appreciate Bagent. He reminds of Kyle Orton, a good, but not great quarterback. Orton was a guy who would throw you 1 or 2 TDs per game. He was a game manager, accurate, and good decision maker. Most of his throws were short, but he could throw intermediate and surprise occasionally with a deep ball. While Orton wouldn’t outright win you the game with his superstar talent, he wouldn’t lose the game for you. He was above average and that’s a lot more than Chicago Bears fans have had for a long time.

Fields COULD become a great QB. The potential is there, but he simply has to start cutting that ball loose and anticipating the open receiver. In year 3, I think most of us hoped that Fields would have gotten to that point, but he hasn’t. Unlike what others have said, the offensive line did not improve the last 2 games. Bagent simply didn’t hold onto the ball as long as Fields does. The line played the same.

Bagent > Fields is the biggest Chicago sports meatball take. Fields is significantly more talented than Bagent.

Other than a good completion %, Bagent had an incredibly pedestrian Stat line last week. The ONLY reason we won is because the Raiders are a dumpster fire.

Maybe the playbook opens up a little more this week and we see more out of Bagent. But 162/1 isn’t going to make us competitive, ever.

I’m over Fields at this point. But he is sooooo much more talented than Bagent.

Dude has started one game and played well for what he was asked to do which was 3 yard passes. I think the kid might be an OK qb2 in the league but not ready to anoint shit yet.

This is exactly how I feel. Everytime bagent did something good last game all I saw on the game thread was “Fields Stans in shambles”. These people just want to argue on the Internet, I just want to have a group of people to be on this roller coaster of a season with. But right now the seats are filled with people puking on everyone.

I wanted to see Justin succeed so badly, but he’s had enough chances. He is literally hurting our team, making the OLine work twice as much, if not more, and demoralizing our receivers by not throwing the ball when they’re wide open. Personally, I don’t care how Bagent plays tomorrow, I wanna see what he can do for the rest of the season, before we draft a 1st round QB. Justin Fields is a bust, the sooner you all come to grips with this reality the sooner you can move on.

You can usually weed out the unintelligent and irrational Bears fan because their favorite player is the backup QB. The second Bagent has a bad game, these same people will be naming the next unknown backup as the savior. The Bears could have the reincarnation of Joe Montana back there and they would be screaming for the backup to get playing time. It just is what it is.

You can usually weed out the unintelligent and irrational Bears fan because they dont realize the “backup QB” isn’t just some journeyman veteran backup. Its literally a rookie who looked better than 99% of QBs in history in their first NFL start, and is showing elite skills, and has crazy elite work ethic, intelligence and improvement rate comparable to some of the all time greats.

Also these unintelligent and irrational Bears fans will say things like “omg he only threw short passes” “162 yards lol what a bum” and “the defense and running game won the game, the QB didnt do anything”.

The easily apparent lack of football IQ(but extreme false sense of confidence to have strong opinions on the sport) is the easiest way to spot them quickly.

I’m all for watching Bagent and cheering for his success. So please explain to new the elite skill he has shown and give some examples of his crazy elite work ethic and improvement rate. I’m genuinely curious.

Very valid points. My honest and humble opinion:

Bears franchise is a black hole from QBs careers: agreed. But somehow Bagent seems to be the exception to that, and he fits with the offense Getsy is trying to run.

Given the fact that Justin will probably be activated next week for the saints, It would be really short sighted, well more silly, if Fields lost the starting job backup after two games. Cuz I mean you’re talking about a guy that is 2nd all time in highest rush yards in a season for a QB. But when I look at the 49ers, they invested a lot and even traded up to get their guy Trey Lance - then Brock Purdy comes in full his full game manager swag and the go 5-0, and they kept him at the top of the depth chart, trade away Lance for scraps, and they are top of the power rankings.

Whether you are a Fields guy or Bagent guy you got to admit Bagent has the more exciting story.

It’s a small sample size and no starting QB should lose their job for a backup playing 2 good games (assuming he does well against the chargers). But honestly idk that sort of thing happens all the time in this league, Tiki Barber, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Dak Prescott (who ironically took Tony Romo’s job) - the list goes on and on.

Chargers are 31st ranked defense i feel pretty good we’ll see some deeper throws from Bagent and he hits his O/U over 191 pass yards.

100% Fields is back under center if Tbag plays sub par, and 98% Fields starts even if Bagent has a good game. But regardless of what happens both will have a shorter leash. Even if Bagent wins the starting job I would at least like to see Fields get a couple snaps in the red zone or 4th down to present the running threat.

    Excited for tomorrow!

Bro. It’s as simple as this: Fields cannot process the field. He will never win a SB. Ever. So why are we sticking w/ him? Let’s trade him to the Falcons.

Bagent has shown poise and that he can process the field. I’d rather take a flyer on him than stick with Fields because again, he’s had 3 years and he still looks terrible out there. He’s nothing more than a highlight reel, not a contending SB QB. Period.

Can we not use the term civil war? The one we had was a race war north vs south basically fighting to keep black people slaves, using that in context of a white qb vs black one makes it awkward for me as a black male.

It gives me a feeling about the situation I’m trying not to have.

I don’t care who is at QB the issues with the team lie with the coaching staff and upper management, let’s get a discussion going about that so some of the younger fans realize that most of us have seen this same song and dance for 30+ years.

What’s weird is people thinking this team should perform like they are in year 4 of a perfect five year rebuild. Reality is this team still has a looooong ways to go to be a contender. Had the #1 pick last year for a reason.
