In short, 2025 was a difficult year. New Zealand often scores well or shows improvement on global indexes, but look closer to home and the devil is in the detail. To borrow a phrase from old school reports: Shows great potential but needs to try harder.

The general impression I get from this article is that we still rank highly for most things, but we’re slipping.

    This one is telling:

Prisons: Incarceration rates are growing fast, moving past 10,680 people behind bars in March (up from a low of 7500 in 2022), with strong growth projected.

      Yeah, that’s a huge jump!

I’m surprised the manufactured recession didn’t make it into the economy segment, but maybe that’s just me being a wellingtonian

We’ll be mirroring the US in no time! Something every country wants to do, right? …

This is a bit grim reading to be honest. Especially seeing we are 4th in the world in corruption when it’s clear to see our cabinet members are obviously following lobby group interests.

Its a ranking of countries by perceived corruption. We used to be higher and we are slipping down, so people are noticing the corruption.

But also, every country likely has this sort of corruption, being #1 doesn’t mean you have no corruption, just seen as having less corruption than others.

That’s what I mean by it’s a bit grim. If we’re 4th in the world for perceived corruption, and it’s obvious what is happening here. Then that makes the majority of the world more corrupt, which is a bit depressing when you think about it.

There is little we can actually do about it except vote wisely. However, given the media and mainstream social media bias to right wing politics (largely owned by billionaires who have their own interests) it’s difficult for me to see a fair election happening in the future.

Sorry, I may not have phrased my initial thoughts very well

Yeah sorry I misunderstood, yeah it’s a bit grim. With micro targeting it’s hard to imagine it getting better soon 🙁

In saying that, I also need to look at the positives, that we do live in a country that is highly regarded internationally. So all is not lost.

I just need to do what I can to make our slice of the world a better place to live.

Yeah exactly, we aren’t aiming for perfect, just trying to make sure things are getting better not worse, and most of all understanding our sphere of influence and our what is outside our control.
