I’m not sure what it is either, but I feel like so many unnsuccessful or unmemorable Metroidvanias bank too much on early Protag designs. Their worlds are usually nicely fleshed out, NPCs look great, but MC always looks so dull.
There’s a reason why memorable Metroidvanias all have either unique settings or unique MC designs. Banking on generic self-inserts just having lasting impact in the genre.
I bet there will be folks that love this, but games that are built on this twitch-platforming style are too much for my tastes. I can take it in spurts like some of the moments in Ori or Hollow Knight, but when it’s the core of the game 🤷🏼♂️
