Costner's Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema made the decision in order to give audiences more time to discover the initial movie before the sequel.

I haven’t seen them all and whether they are traditional westerns is up for debate, but those are the names I recognized from the Wikipedia pages.
That said, I totally agree with you and am not trying to diminish your point! There’s only been like 4 big westerns since 2012 and I don’t think any of them have the white hero character that OC is talking about.
