How did a machine gun mounted in the back of a Hilux beat out this marvel of engineering as the stereotypical weapon of insurgents and rebels?

Most likely because this is extremely inefficient. One person can’t both focus on driving, navigating and getting the killing done.

Technicals have place for a driver that drives Toyota, a guide can sit next to him while third guy can literally ride shotgun (or AK). Then two guys to man the heavy MG mounted in bed, gunner and loader.

Yeah, definitely thinking on it, this would probably be best with a tandem bike, but with the rear person facing backwards manning a rear mounted machine gun.

I’ve spent the entirety of the last five minutes thinking about this thing, and the real pro move would to be making it a two person crew and to mount the main gun facing the rear so as to capture the momentum of the rounds as speed.

In this case, it’d probably be worth it to have a small machine gun for the forward facing “driver” to use, maybe with a rack of grenades/other thrown explosive on the front.

So anyway, I’m sure this comment will get me onto some kind of FBI/NSA/CIA watch list.

I’d love to make an ultralight quad like this but I think I might need to forgo the gun

      I think you can legally own a Gardner Gun or other hand-cranked weapon. I think that’s a Maxim in the picture, but the a e s t h e t i c remains. Don’t let your dreams be dreams!
