I’m trying to rescue data from an old Huawei Ascend P6 with a broken screen, is there a way to get access to the data and clone it, without screen interaction?

Does it still display stuff? Then you could just connect a mouse.

Even without the screen it might be possible to enter a passcode with a mouse or keyboard. Once it’s unlocked it should be able to be connected to a PC over USB and copy off all the data.

This is not restricted for input devices (only on GrapheneOS).

But usb data transfer needs to be unlocked in settings->connections->usb at least on stock Android

It’s been a long time since I’ve used USB OTG and I can’t find my adapter to test this, but what I remember is that the mouse cursor just appeared when plugging in the mouse to the phone. The keyboard also just works as an input device when plugged in. Can you see what’s on the screen or is the screen display broken along with the digitizer?

No the screen is broken like totally gone, it glitches and it’s 95% shattered, it only lights on and the phone doesn’t even vibrat to indicate “something”

It’s been a long time since I’ve used USB OTG

Oh, so… I guess that’s why… yeah… Like I said, Android will ask you : what you wanna do ? And you have to select ( transfer files ) otherwise it won’t give you access to it’s local storage…

Edit: not sure if you use USB to the PC and OTG at the same time.

It’s possible to hit the “transfer files” button with keyboard and mouse. The popup will likely be in focus to navigate/select with the keyboard. You could try running an Android simulator with your Android OS version and screen dimensions side by side and work through it that way. It’d take some trial and error but not impossible.

  • if you can find an identical phone you can try to enable adb blindly by touching the areas on the screen, then use scrcpy

but in that case maybe just easier to enable mtp via usb

The screen is completely shattered and glitching, it won’t work unfortunately…

I’m pretty sure, if all else fails, someone really good at electronics can find the storage module in the phone, hook it to a PC and extract its data. I hope it’s not encrypted, because in that case that has to be figured out as well.

However, I recommend making regular backups while a phone still works. I copy everything over to my PC via SFTP from time to time and sometimes I use that new phone app (in my case Smart Switch) to mirror everything to my backup phone.

find the storage module in the phone, hook it to a PC and extract its data

I thought this would be one of the potential solutions, for it because the screen is just gone, and they’re scarce… But like you said they have to be really good

      I hope it’s not encrypted

It runs a very outdated android, I’m not sure about the state of encryption in such devices 🤷‍♂️

Came with Android 4.2, Android 6 was the first to ship storage encryption by default.

So yes, just hook it up to a laptop and use the MTP connection?

File explorer detects an empty drive, and asks me to insert a drive… Screen interaction is required with this one I guess
