Yeah I can really recommend the midimix ! A bit more expensive, but apparently nicer feeling (bigger sliders/pots) is the novation launch control xl. It really changes how you see and use vcv. Since I’ve got the controller I can use vcv to actually « play » and jam with other musicians.

I was thinking that as well, it could be the actual mechanics, hammers and keys, that are being heard. Could be eq’ed to amplify them. I’ve done similar things with different mics and mic positions to record piano, to capture the “mechanical” sound of a piano.

Yeah sample generation is great, or to create a synth patch to be played with a midi keyboard. There are quite a few sequencers and sequencer “accessories” (ie. expanders, clock dividers, quantisers, etc…), it’s definitely worth exploring them ! As I recommended in the thread, a midi controller with a few knobs and sliders is also a great way to “play” vcv/cardinal.

You use the beads as an fx processor software as well ?

I’ve seen pictures of VCV/Cardinal on the steam deck, how is it ? Does it work well ?

I’ve also definitely learned a lot more about synthesis since using VCV.

I’m using the akai midimix, the cheapest mixer-type controller basically -> 9 sliders, 24 knobs, 18 or 20 buttons. I have a default patch set up that assigns the faders to an 8 track mixer + Master volume, and then I assign the knobs and buttons to whatever I feel like going along, it’s nearly instant with a module called MIDI-CAT. The midimix is not the best controller obviously, but at 50€ second hand it’s great.

It definitely makes using vcv a lot better, you can really play the patches you make, it’s so much better. I really recommend trying it out.

Why do you use Cardinal and not vcv rack ? So you can use it in a DAW for free ?

I get the temptation to build it with physical hardware too, but as you said, I don’t want to ruin myself financially hah. There are also so many synths and semi-modular synths out there that are so much more affordable than physical modular. For now I’m happy in vcv with some external controllers, that really makes it worthwhile imo.

Edit : I forgot to ask, what kind of music do you make with Cardinal ?

DIY Eurorack sounds like a lot of fun. Do you design the schematics or find pre-existing ones and recreate them ? As much as I like hardware, I’ve never got into modular because of the cost. I think semi-modular synths and/or vcv is a good compromise, but I’m intrigued by diy modular, I’ve done a bit of diy effect pedals which was fun.

What’s the discord server if you don’t mind me asking ? I’ve got a friend that does film scoring and is starting to get into video game music, so game jams would be fun. I’m thinking of trying it out as well.

Do you know VCV Rack ? It’s a free virtual modular synth program, it’s great fun for synth based music and sound design.

I’ve just started listening, great loops and processing ! Seems like a fun setup you’ve got there, must be great to play with.

Yeah such a nice feeling ! Especially the second track Repetitions, it’s nostalgic, and it’s got a 90s French Touch feel to it. I really like the “minimalist” synth and sound approach, it makes for a really simple mix that just gels together really well, with the nice wide pans. This could be fun to play live !

What was the the game jam like ? I’ve never done one !

I think that furniture music has it’s uses and moments. Furniture music isn’t just one genre imo, it’s more based on context. Ambient music was somewhat made to be background music, like Brian Eno’s Music For Airports, but many people listen to it attentively. For example a jazz band playing at a cocktail reception can be background music and a ambient concert can be the main event, and the opposite is true, a jazz gig as the main event and ambient music as a background for an event or exposition. Another example is the lofi hip-hop to study to playlists, great example of furniture music with a purpose.

That’s a pretty innovative sound card for sure ! I’m surprised I haven’t seen sound cards with CV/hardware and software integration before.

I like the idea of using the sound card in the creative process, as opposed to just letting it sit at the back of the desk. I wonder if it will gain adoption and inspire other manufacturers to go this way. This could be a new turning point in the sound card market.
