I know two that I can verify. One is a combat vet who had to kill during a fire fight in Iraq. Yeah I read up on them before I bought, APC seemed like the best. I test them at least once a year and so far I’ve only had to replace one battery. Depending on the application I paid between $80 and $180 for each, but the higher upfront cost seems to have paid off for me at least. I am a sample size of 1, your results may vary.

Yep, the black outs have stopped now but for a while it was a daily occurrence. My NAS took a beating and so did my desktop. I spent a ton on ups’s to make sure that stuff was protected and bonus, I wouldn’t loose connection while on phone calls with government officials while at work… they get pissy when you suddenly drop off.

Seriously, one black out and suddenly you see the need for a UPS. Now my desktop is on a USB, my work laptop and monitors are on a UPS, my homelab is on a UPS, even my modem and router are on a UPS. I just wish I could get a backup generator, but that’s not happening anytime soon.

Two problems with that. 1) I work 3rd shift and would be either asleep or just waking up when they close, and 2) I have worked many retail jobs and the last minute customers were despised and I don’t think I could do that to them knowing how it screwed me over ever time.

I thought for a long time that there should be 4 sites for the Olympics, two for summer and two for winter. The Olympic committee maintains them with help from the host county and donations or dues from the participants counties.

Pick 4 suitable sites in as stable countries as you can find, and build world class facilities there. This whole building all new facilities every time is fucking stupid and wasteful. Besides it’s been shown that the “revenue generated” doesn’t make up for the costs to build, run, and clean up after all of it.
