I’m like this post but I use GNU Guix System instead of Gentoo and GNU Boot instead of the old fully free Libreboot (and I have my own appartment lol).
Some computers do not require having the ME firmware installed. Usually, these are computers supported by a 100% free BIOS replacement such as GNU Boot (see the compatible models on the website). Libreboot was fully free in the past but it’s not true anymore since it does now support computers needing the ME working (at least for computer initialization) but neutered so that most of it can’t operate. However, you can’t be sure whether a neutered ME is harmful or not since we don’t know what it can really do as the initialization source code is not known.

There are intermediary steps, e.g. GNU Guix System 🫣
I would say that a mathematician would rather write i²=-1 than sqrt(-1)=i

2·6 months agoThe main difference with NixOS is that it’s fully free. Another difference is that the language used for configuration in Guix is Scheme, a general purpose functional language.

7·6 months agoGNU Guix System, using GNU Shepherd as init. It does its job quite well.
I’m in my late 20s and started with ms-dos too. And even tried OS/2 to check I wasn’t missing something before upgrading to 3.1 then XP 😂

20·7 months agoIt would give an enormous power to who controls this “front page”. This page could restrict any user arbitrarily, lock them out, spy on them, etc. And because this page would be unique, they would have no alternative. This is exactly why federation is a key to freedom.
I can only recommend Guix system 👍

When you consider your freedom, the good old thinkpad is better. And even better if compatible with GNU Boot 😁
Well in fact, that’s not true they follow the same philosophy. See the GNU Boot talk at 38c3, but tldw is that canoeboot advocates for Libreboot and against RYF and so on. Btw, GNU Boot maintainers are quite active (see also the repo, I’m one of them).
GNU Boot is not against canoeboot as such, but Leah Rowe hasn’t the same philosophy (and does not follow FSDG)
