mr_might44@lemmy.worldtoClimate Apocalypse@lemmy.dbzer0.com•The world is in water bankruptcy, UN scientists report – here’s what that means
3·3 days agoThe sad part is that those who are most affected by it are the least responsible for causing it. Right now, most of the problems are in third world countries, so the West turns a blind eye. Next it’ll be our poor people too, and the rich won’t bat an eye. And by the time the problem reaches them too, they’ll already have their own solutions. Sucks to see, sucks even more to just let it happen. So, if you think this is depressing, be part of the change you want to see! Even just using one liter of water less per day can have a big impact if enough people do it, and if that’s not your cup of tea, there’s also a multitude of initiatives you can support or donate to.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to avoid hating the opposite gender after reading what they write online?
5·3 days agoInteract with them in person. Men and women write a lot of polarising shit online, but once you go outside it’s (usually) not that bad. Sure, there’s always some asshats here and there, but I feel like there’s also a lot more good people around than you realize.

Green & indigenous News@news.abolish.capital•Aging zoo animals threaten long-term species conservation goals
1·3 days agoI wonder what the underlying cause of this demographic shift is, and how they’ll handle it effectively. There’s usually only so many resources and subsidies to sustain these animals, so limits to growth will probably always be there. Just wondering how they’ll “get rid of” the older animals to make place for young ones.
The world’s leaders looked at history, and instead of saying “we won’t make these mistakes again”, they said “we can do it better”.

Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes@lemmy.zip•[Discussion] Do you prefer more direct storytelling in your soulslikes or obscure, indirect ways of storytelling?
10·12 days agoI like the way Miyazaki handles it, makes me feel like I’m really exploring the world and uncovering its secrets. Nothing beats the feeling of making the connection between a random sword’s description and some kind of important figure. And the things I miss, I can probably find in a lore video somewhere.

Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes@lemmy.zip•[Discussion] What's your stance on companions in soulslikes?
5·12 days agoI don’t know, seems like a thing that’s hard to get right. A Marvel-quip like character would probably take me right out of the usually dark atmosphere of souls likes. Personally, I wouldn’t like a permanent companion that I can’t turn off. I think the Elden Ring system does it well, with optional summons (either spirit ashes, or the NPC summons for fights like Radahn).

science@lemmy.world•‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human bodyEnglish
23·12 days agoSo, just science being science then? Disagreements have always been a part of science, and always will be. The only important factor is how they are handled. Think a study is flawed? Repeat it, and change the flaws to see if the results differ significantly. But openly discrediting any evidence (for or against a case) without testing is as unscientific as it gets. I believe the person at the end also has a point: yeah, we don’t know if microplastics are as bad as they say, but better safe than sorry.

7·12 days agoHindsight can be a powerful thing Just because something seemed beneficial or good in the moment, does not mean it actually was. And even if it was, if the guy reflected on it and decided he didn’t support it anymore, that’s his choice to make.

Even so, baby steps are still steps. Just because not everything has been replaced doesn’t mean it won’t get replaced in the (far) future.
