You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Stanford scientists recently examined what happens when people stop using social media. They found deactivating Facebook and Instagram improved users' emotional well-being and happiness
3·15 hours agoObviously yes, because once removed from social media an individual stops being compared against and forced into FOMO.
Otherwise it takes some technical skill to curate experiences in social media, like choosing whom to actually follow and interact, keeping only truly best friends, limiting how much personal information is given to Zuck, and using plugins and scripts to control how much actual content is being shown. As someone who lived with a dumb phone for a long time until 2012, it’s disgusting but is a necessary evil I have to be on social media in some form (not using my deadname), because the majority of the clients I have to deal with are mostly on Facebook Messenger nearly all the time.

Philippines@lemmy.world•(Philippines) Close to 300 Palawan residents accused of squatting on their ancestral landsEnglish
1·4 hours agoIn 1972, San Miguel Corporation under Danding Cojuangco was awarded lands in Bugsuk island as part of a deal with the administration of president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. as part of an agrarian reform program. In exchange the SMC ceded lands to the government in other parts of the country.[2] The SMC developed a coconut plantation. This caused a land dispute between the SMC and the indigenous people who insist on ancestral domain claims.[3][4]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugsuk#History
Not new. If the island is bought and earmarked for development without them aware of the transaction then it is no surprise there will be a long war, given that they’re dealing with a corporation making some of its profits from extremely popular booze, and has already diversified such as building expressways and soon one of the largest airports on earth. With at least a handful of military generals on the take (hence why there are army outposts at any corporate development even in areas not known to have significant NPA presence, to block mainly left-wing protesters).
Therefore they should switch brands, like NOT buying anything from SMC: Red Horse, GSM, etc.

1·20 hours agoIDK, but it feels some of the younger ones are more pessimistic than their elders (who think it’s okay letting politicians have their way as long as they have their basic needs met), especially in terms of job security and income, and that got expanded further with their concepts of economic security and public safety.
They want to know where their taxes are going, and likewise – if they’re in the middle class as they claim – some of them are blaming the lower classes for their supposed misery for voting the “wrong” candidate.

World News@lemmy.world•For most of the world, the US is now a malign actorEnglish
6·2 days agoIt could come to your country too unless you take action.
I’m in a developing country already out of the shadow of a gun-toting jackass who nearly sold us out to China, no thanks to disinformation, and currently having to deal with politicians and businessmen ripping off the government in infrastructure money.
The US may soon have the hardest fall unless something drastic happens.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Judging by how many users on the internet telling Americans to "just move to another country lolz", people must think immigration laws are very lax or something... (it's not)
4·3 days agoYeah, some countries do have very strict standards for entry as much as the US; they’ll choose only those they deem worthy by their standards – entry is only possible with either level of wealth, skill sets, pedigree, language, or a combination of those.
However, there are some people in my country who envy and would even fight to get a chance to be American, despite the ongoing horrors in there, because they still equate citizenship in a developed country with wealth and supposed freedom from corruption.
