  • our anti-zionism rule follows the same fallacy, as anti-semitism laws in many european did: it is too narrow and too broad at the same time.

it is too broad in a sense that we talked about banning problematic users. now we talk about banning communities, which cover much of a language. dach is a big collection bucket for europeans speaking german. in their sidebar they mention, that they want to keep palestine / israel discussions out of the comm - which is fair play IMO.

it is too narrow in a sense, that it is hyper focussed on one issue. zionists are bad and commit atrocities, which need to be harshly reprehended. but there are many bad things, which do not get caught by this rule. as an example: what happens to the uyghur population in china is simply not ok. still .ml is an instance, which quite openly denies that anything even happens. yet we are not discussing banning accounts and or communities, which do these things.

i would much rather have an anti-discrimination rule, which covers zionism, racism, sexism, discrimination on hair colour, medical things, … this rule should also define what actions we can and want to take again who and what.

this would cover more problems, while not excluding anyone. hopefully also reduce needed arguments.

  • lots of people already pointed out tools to (kind of) dry run locally. they are great to figure out cryptic error messages.

however, if you have issues with the complexity of the whole pipeline, it is usually easier to just execute the whole pipeline. for that we have the branch prefix cicd/ and treat these exactly as main/master and develop (except the very last deployment step). that way we can see where a whole pipeline will go. and when it is finally doing what it should, we can squash it before merge -> have a nice history.

  • thanks for pointing to that issue. i dont know how piefed devs reacted to this. so i will give them the benefit of the doubt: it could very well be a quick and dirty solution, never meant to last long.

as the lemmy devs showed, it does not have to be like this at all. but i haven’t seen that much oppinionsted and defensive actions from the piefed devs.

  • you are confuddling some things here. nazi germany was germany under nazi leadership. and you will be hard pressed to find anyone giving them support.

however, germany and its people very much have a right to exist. which they do today.

israel state is under zionist leadership and is doing horrible things. however, saying that all israeli people do not have a right to have land or even exist… is quite close to what zionists say about a different group of people.

  • to everyone so worked up about bricks on the 25th floor:

if you search for ‘1412 broadway’ (which OP mentioned multiple times) you quickly find ‘Elsie Rooftop’ bar. which, in fact, is on the 25th floor of 1412 broadway. on opentable, you find this picture of the bar:

which shows, that there are bricks on the 25th floor of 1412 broadway. and that there is a structure in the background, which looks quite similar to what OP posted.

is it proof, that everything about OPs picture and small description is genuine? no! is it enough things that matches, so that I believe them? yes! especially considering that this would be a weirdly well constructed forgery for some internet points…

  • Sure, and there are religious ppl who update their beliefs based on changes on society, discovery in science, …

but there are religious nuts who stick to taking 2000+ years old stories and insist on taking them literally. actively ignoring facts that where known back then. one example is numbers: there are places where religious stories mention specific numbers (10’000, 1’000’000, don’t remember and won’t look it up). people back then used these as “too many to count” or “really much”. but some ppl nowadays insist, that whatever their god is made sure, that these numbers are exactly the correct number…

  • i don’t know activity pub well enough to say what is possible to do on it. i was just saying what would be cool, to avoid tyrading users, based on what sometimes seems to be one or two votes.

IMO vote spam is just buildt into lemmy. spinning up your own instance and pretty much nuke any post, user, community, … you want is not that hard. i thought of writing my on POC for a 1 click script like that - but did not end up doing so, as i was too lazy.

i guess that is my main motivation behind being against easily accessibly insight into votes: most ppl are too lazy to do it themselves. it is good to know anyone can access it. but they have to put a little effort into that.

you and i will probably not agree on that, but that is fine.

  • FOR

Yes the data is available to anyone, but at least it involves some technical prowess.

The amount of times i have seen people discuss some users votes and what they interpret into it is just weird. let them at least dig for the stuff a little bit.

from a privacy standpoint it would be great, if the data could even be hidden from admins. while still allowing to do some verification (like in these governance threads). but that is a problem for the lemmy devs.

  • do you remember, when advertisement was OK? i used YT for a long time without adblocker. there where funny animations on the side of the video, a mildly annoying bar at the bottom with an easily clickable close button. Youtubers where funny, edgy and talked the way they wanted.

i think advertisement that way is OK: sometimes slightly annoying but it paid for the Youtubers and the platform, while not influencing the content.
