Jon S. von Tetzchner
I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.
I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.

Indeed, we are using Chromium, but there really is not a lot of choice. I hope you will make the switch. If you liked Opera 12, you will love Vivaldi.

1·1 year agoThanks for your kind words. Did you try Workspaces in Vivaldi as well? Quick commands? The searchable Window panel?

Have you tried looking at the Windows panel? You can sort tabs there. The search there is pretty helpful as well.
We continue to work on the ad blocker. It will continue to improve.

0·1 year agoWe have found that having things integrated has significant benefits, but of course there is a bit of getting used to. Give it a try!
As a side note, it is easy to run multiple instances of Vivaldi, so you can run Mail, Calendar and Feeds in one instance and most of your Web browsing in another. There is flexibility here.

1·1 year ago@geillescas@techhub.social , I have not tried them, but it looks like they have taken some inspiration from Vivaldi. Even marketing.

1·1 year ago@p4@masto.ai , I am very proud of what we built at Opera at that time, but you will find that and more in Vivaldi now.

History@fedia.io•The first software I built was Fm2HTML, that took FrameMaker documents and converted them to HTML. This is the early days of the Web.
1·1 year agoThis code has not been updated since I stopped working on it in 1994 and started working on Opera instead.
At the time FLOSS was not even a term. The code was open. You would typically compile it yourself. I believe that if you wanted to use it commercially, you would have had to contact Televerkets Forskningsinstitutt, which I was working for at the time.

I wish I could have used Presto, but sadly that is not an option. The Presto code was much better in many ways that both Gecko and Blink. It was all in one. Very little 3rd party code. It compiled in a couple of minutes on a slow computer.
At this time the Chromium codebase is the best available.
Clearly there is a lot more to a browser than just the core and we modify the core as needed as well, so I hope you see we are providing something special here.
