LeopardsAteMyFace@lemmy.ca•American distilleries ‘devastated’ by collapse of trade talks as they face hundreds of millions in lost sales
2·4 days agoIt only loads a picture, and about a paragraph for me.
Copying is not theft:
At a previous job, I had to build laptops that would multi-boot DOS, Win95, Win98, and XP, all on one laptop. Our field-tech’s software had to have those specific versions of windows for the machines that they serviced, because of how the software interacted with USB and embeded floppy drives.
If you want to scare yourself:
spoiler
They serviced Medical devices: X-rays, MRIs, CT-Scanners, etc.
So 99% sure this is fake and never happened…
You can tell its fake, because its greentext

6·5 days agoAs a hard-of-hearing person, I need either subtitles, or super-loud volume. But bad sound-mixers in todays movies make everyone mumble right before giant explosions.
And I really hate that Meta fucked up smart-glasses for everyone. We could have had IRL subtitles for people like me on local-only glasses, that don’t record people, but they had to make it creepy.

United States | News & Politics@midwest.social•In capitalist America, the bank robs you!
2·6 days agoI guess that Americans aren’t supposed to know how to avoid debt.
Of course not, that’s kinda the point of our financial system.
I had half a semester of ‘home econ’ in my seinor year of High School ~2000. We didn’t really cover much that was useful for actually balancing a checkbook. The class was clearly a checkbox that they didn’t actually expect us to do anything in.

5·7 days agoGood on ya!
I used to be like that too. My SO helped me get over that habit. I really wish we were taught the basics of this kinda stuff in school…
I had racist relatives who never stopped saying the N word in public. Trump winning made them even more detestable to hang around.
But they’re dead now, and the world is a better place for it.

4·7 days agoAlthough I agree with you, I had that issue well before AI was a thing:
“I dunno, I just copied it from this StackOverflow post…”

Linux@programming.dev•Debian developer Antoine Le Gonidec resigns after option allowing corporate LLM use without disclosure wins vote
61·7 days agoAgreed. I think they should have pushed for stronger disclosure requirements, but I also realise that isn’t actually enforceable.
I also find it very telling that people will talk about the negative parts of AI, but not acknowledge other automation tools that perpetuate the same problems. My experience is that most people’s complaints have a real basis, but they are just mis-diagnosed.
The problems seem to be our economic and societal structures, and AI is the new fancy tool that exacerbates those problems. But I’ve not heard a good reason why AI itself is that problem.

12·7 days agoDidn’t fuck up the global economy with dumbass trade wars and dumbass regular wars.
Yes he did.
Didn’t attempt to control the media
Yes he did.
Didn’t try to sell off national park land to oil companies and logging companies.
Yes he did.
Was arguably doing the best he could to get the economy back on track and inflation under control, instead of doing the exact opposite.
I didn’t see that happen at all.
Didn’t accept extravagant ‘totally not a bribe’ gifts from semi-hostile foreign nations.
Yes he did.
The rest I agree with.
But you’ve got to admit that Trump is demonstrably, materially worse in a lot of ways.
I do agree that Biden was marginally better. But that’s not the claim that was made. The claim was that Biden was “still infinity better”.

Linux@programming.dev•Debian Votes To Allow "Responsible Use Of Generative AI"
11·7 days agoCan you at least try to answer my question?
You laid out a set of criteria: “…wage theft, human suffering, environmental destruction and empowerment of the oligarchies”
All of the examples I gave meet that criteria. Why is AI different?
Come on, be honest.

…a difference be it as small as it may be…
I was simply pointing out that one of these is very different than the other. I never said that I didn’t see a difference between the two.
I also find it pretty telling that someone showing support for a genocide-supporting, rapist and child-killer is calling me a boot-licker.

Linux@programming.dev•Debian Votes To Allow "Responsible Use Of Generative AI"
11·8 days agoSo are you mad at power-tools? The internet? Cars? Because they are “building on the base of wage theft, human suffering, environmental destruction and empowerment of the oligarchies.”
Why are you mad at one set of tools, but not the other sets of tools?

Eh, I dunno about that. They are until election season, then suddenly its “Blue No Matter Who, even if they don’t support trans rights!”
