Though the fediverse in general is growing it looks like Lemmy is losing users since last year. I guess thats because a percentage of Reddit refugees that came here after the API debacle eventually just went back to Reddit. A similar story is probably true for Mastodon. After Musk bought Twitter/X there was an influx of users but not everyone stayed. But because this data is only a year old is difficult to see how many of these users stayed for good. Give what people on here have said though it sounds like it was a fair amount.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Given the obviously wide reaching implications of the Epstein files why arent other world governments demanding access or copies?English
2·4 hours agoYou might be right. I really don’t know what would be included under their intelligence sharing agreements, I just know that an agreement exists

3·3 hours agoThere are already apps that target this demographic but expanding on it. Anecdotally many of the people attached to 4o seem to be women seeking emotional attachment. These new AI companion apps scope up this demographic I’m sure. But they also target horny men and prey on their impulses to drain their credit cards (you buy your AI gifts or whatever until the post-nut clarity sets in I guess).

36·7 hours agoThe US already has intelligence sharing programs with many of their Allies (eg the five eyes alliance, which includes Canada, Australia, the UK and NZ). So other nations very well may have copies

2·15 hours agoInteresting I didn’t realize there was research on this stuff. Yeah maybe I should go to beehaw too. Blahaj is another one that disables downvotes. It’s true theres no full account migration but theres ways to export your settings and subscription etc to a new community (see this or this). Apparently theres also ways to link two accounts for a persistent identity, by putting the other accounts username in your bio or something, but I don’t know a lot about that.

2·16 hours agoYeah. In my experience upvotes/downvotes often have very little to do with the actual quality of a comment and more to do with how much it conforms with the current political zeitgeist of whatever community you’re participating in. The converse of this is that low quality comments telling people who disagree to go F themselves may also get upvotes.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you get reliable information nowadays?English
111·2 days agoYeah, forum posts are becoming really useful again. A few years ago whenever someone posted a question to a forum you could often find the same snarky remark in the comments: ‘just google it’. There was even a website created to add to the snark (let me google that for you). And there was some truth to that comment. Usually you could find the answer pretty easily with a quick search.
But that’s not the case anymore. With AI slop, search engines are getting less and less helpful. Slop has polluted our search results just like plastic has polluted our oceans. It’s at the point now where search engines are almost useless for large subsets of common queries. So we are slowly returning to a pre-search engine era. In this new, post-search engine era, forum posts provide a very useful way of providing information. Long live the forum.
