  • Welcome to most modern journalism! Remember when every news org started spending time going to Twitter to get the general population’s reactions (instead of actually interviewing real people and figuring out how actually widespread a viewpoint is)? It’s been downhill from there.

Combined with most people only reading headlines, news organizations almost never providing context for most actual facts, and wealth concentration like we’ve never seen, the current state of news media is pretty dire.

You can get people to assume almost any cynical worldview you want when you can chip away at their belief in humanity by repeatedly showing only the worst examples of it. This is what conservative news media has been so good at - getting them to believe a specific image of “liberal” and allowing that image to represent ALL liberals instead of just the most extreme side. Honestly, it feels like most people on the left are similarly starting to use dehumanizing language to describe conservatives. All this leads to people avoiding communication because they assume that everyone on “the other side” believes insane nonsense. Sometimes they do. A lot of times, they don’t.

  • The US adult population is something like 260 million, and Trump has like 73 million votes.

Tons of those people also had to deal with votor suppression, and I even had to manually cure my ballot this year because my “signature didn’t match” supposedly (as did 5 other people I know who dropped off at the same location).

We’ve also been under a huge amount of propaganda and some people are literally living in separate realitites where their enemies are ridiculous evil characatures.

Like… I get it. It’s hard to feel good towards America right now, and lots of those people who didn’t vote deserve a lot of this blame. But is it really that rational to throw the rest of America under the bus?

At the very least, just help the people around you. Just be a person and participate in your community. You don’t need to put a bunch of time and energy into political activism, but work done to help local communities is never wasted.

  • Out of curiosity, have you been a moderator before?

It’s a fairly thankless job that you volunteer for. Most people aren’t doing it out of some lust for power, they’re just doing their best and sometimes make bad calls.

Are there shitty ones out there? Sure. But many of them are just trying to make nice spaces for their interest.
