One of the roles of Anubis was as the “Guardian of the Scales.”[41] The critical scene depicting the weighing of the heart, in the Book of the Dead, shows Anubis performing a measurement that determined whether the person was worthy of entering the realm of the dead

Aura is the only character I know who weighs intangible souls? mana? with her scales. Not quite the same sense as robot seeing captcha box.

  • I was just kidding, unless…

Another easy way came to mind while I was out.

    > Surface Deform or Mesh Deform modifier

I can’t think of a good analogy, probably like sticking stuffs to chicken wires in simple shape, then you bang those wires into more complex shape. Still kind of tedious because you have to make a patch of scales and the binding target.

Still, I don’t think this can beat tissue on speed or control and quality of geometry node or brush. But it is simple if you want to get it done rather than fumbling around with tissue addon.

The extra mesh addon is very helpful. It was updated sometime ago with triangle grid. You can use this with geometry node to place scales on each vertex that offset every other row so you don’t have to place it by hand. Then use modifier to bind it to “wires” so on and so forth.

  • After re re re read the post body, I decided to trim down to only viable solutions.

You are not making monster dildo, aren’t you? OP?

    > Textured brush

There are two approaches if you for some reason want to manually place scales on the egg, one by one. You make alpha map or VDM of the scale and use that to stamp on to the egg. Alpha map is a grayscale map with value applying to strength of sculpt brush. VDM is similar but instead of only height in one direction (normal, the direction facing directly away from surface) you have 3D shape you can glue on with sculpt brush e.g. sticking a goat horn on a head. You get more detail this way.
    pros:
    relatively easy
    intuitive
    moderate control
    decent result (with time spent)
    cons:
requires bump map or VDM (paid/free download of maps exist)
super tedious if you have hundreds to stamp but can be speed up if you make a map containing multiple scales you can stamp at once
    keywords:
sculpt VDM alpha map brush texture anchored stroke stencil
    -- recommended for low density

    > Geometry node

The toy of Blender freaks. Imagine using pure math or programming to decide how scales are placed. You do the hard part once and you can put any scale (not just scales) on any egg (not just eggs), ad infinitum. Once they are arranged neatly, or not, up to you, you can then merge (boolean) it to your base egg to make a watertight model you can print. Since printing will go through slicing step, topology can be absolute trash and they will probably print just fine. It offer most versatility. Unlimited shape variation, slight randomness, adjust size to be bigger / smaller in some area, overlapping, you name it (the same thing donut man did with sprinkles, but on steroid).
You can use UV map with this to give it 2D vector information to use in whatever logic you need. For example, the tangent information to differentiate which direction the scales point to on different area of the egg, however there are easier way to control that.
    pros:
    ultimate control
    great result (with enough skill)
    extremely reusable (with enough skill)
    cons:
    extreme learning curve
    upfront time investment
    keywords:
    geometry node
    -- recommended for lunatics

    > Tissue addon

    https://extensions.blender.org/add-ons/tissue/
This is probably the middle point, output quality wise, between textured brush and geometry node. It reduce the tedious part of those methods. You won’t get the same amount of controls as Geometry node but it is waaaaaayyyyy faster than both. I think I have seen a more up to date fork of this addon, I might be wrong.
    pros:
    fast, very fast
    easy
    good amount of control
    great result
    cons:
    some learning curve
    keywords:
    tissue addon
    -- highly recommended

    note:
    https://projects.blender.org/extensions/mesh_tissue/pulls/4

Important Core rules of 3D print model still apply. If the method you choose creates loose meshes, you still have to make it print-ready.

  • I’m nearly finished everything I wanted to watch from 2025 Q4.

The only one left is Shuumatsu-Touring. The characters are nice but the plot so far (EP9) is not very engaging. I thought this will be the best so I saved it for last. Wrong move.

It seems that my strategy of watching 1 trailer each and bubble sort the whole season based on my predicted enjoyment, is not giving a good result.

    Finished this week (kind of)

    • Towa no Yuugure I think this one has the best visual out of roughly 30 I picked from 2025 Q4. Okay-ish story, nothing that will stick with me long afterward. ED is goooood.
    • SPY×FAMILY Season 3 It’s been a long while since anime get an audible laugh out of me.
    The line

Second son. Do you want dog kibble?

    • The Fire Hunter Skipped second season back when it’s airing. Decided to rewatch the whole thing. Not sure if I would watch again if there is a remake in the future. I enjoy the mysteriousness and the world building part up to the end of first season. I don’t know how to describe this kind of “civilization after shit hits the fan” revelation ending, and I don’t remember ever liking any that I have seen.

For 2025 Q4, within the scope of what I watch, I can say without a doubt Campfire Cooking in Another World is the best. (I did not watch the horses)

    edit:
forgot to mention Scarlet. I guess that’s how weak it is. Review on anilist already cover most of what I also think.

Made a big purchase of airsoft parts few months back. The parts arrived this week and to set the mood, I’m getting some cute girls with guns ready to binge. If anyone have more, please let me know.

  • Given that the blender studio uses mostly development versions

Main branch? Yes. Experimental branch? Probably not.

Looking at Light accumulation node you mentioned, it lives in another experimental branch and node tree is a completely different beast. The improvement to the NPR workflow will be huge. Although I can’t see myself using it heavily soon. I will try it out once it is in main behind experimental flag or later.

  • The painterly shadow node is insane, hard to believe they are giving it out for free… aaaaaand… it’s not included in the free week content. Of course.

I don’t think it is completely beyond my skill but I rather have something made and tested by a node wizard. At least one valuable info they share is that it is adapted from brush outline node similar to one from Wing It. Fixing self shadow with ray length will not work on EEVEE either :'( might be able to hack away with raycast node somehow.

  • My librewolf (v147) is not playing nice with it, images not loading and I don’t know which settings or uBO filter is causing it.

EDIT: it’s Firefox’s Enhanced Tracking Protection in “strict” mode blocking pbs.twimg.com :(

    bonk

    broke

  • Someone familiar with OG Lain please enlighten me.

This is a snippet from project’s site.

Technology is not the goal. It is a means of expression.

serial experiments lain also used cutting-edge digital expression for its time, and it caused both praise and criticism.

If, in 1998, people had feared new technology as “too early” or “wrong,” I do not think that work could have been born.

Where can I read more about this “praise and criticism”? Cause this seems to be one of the arguments for AI uses in production.

  • hiro8811 might be right about blue light object.

    try this…

    • add new object, maybe monkey (2m default size, no material)
    • disable other objects both eye and camera icon or just delete them from the scene, one by one until it stop being blue
    • if the monkey is still blue then it’s something in the world material or render settings or compositor

The light that loads when you start a new project. I just think of it as “the sun” because it not a directed light a spotlight.

The sun… IRL behave like a point light so you are technically correct XD
The “sun” type light is there so you don’t have to move point light 149,597,870 km away from your scene center (you can’t and it will break blender)
