The odds of their being a more controversial play than a five yard gain on first down with the remains checks notes 3 & 3/4 quarters left to be played are very high

When a movable object meets a stoppable force

Especially since play callers will intentionally set up a 3rd down play call for 3-4 yards to open up the play book for the already decided go-for-it decision & not the first down.
