What they’re missing is the simple fact that the more people who ride bikes, the fewer parking spots you need!

I still say we should re-brand bike lanes as “Get bikes out of the way of our wonderful precious cars lanes” and then maybe they will realize that bike lanes make driving better too.

59 parking spaces. $5.8 million. That’s king of mind-boggling to me. The article said the developer is not required to put in parking spaces, but I’m kind of wondering where 110 people renting rooms are going to park if they don’t. I’d like to believe that everyone coming in for a Sundance festival or Parents’ weekend at CU or whatever is going to take transit to get there and walk or use bike share while they’re in the city, but even in Boulder, that’s just not realistic yet. I imagine they will put underground parking in when they build the hotel, making this less a story about removing parking and more about transferring ownership of the parking from public to private hands. But at those prices, it’s hard to justify the city hanging onto it.
From an urbanist/anti-car perspective, it’s not a terrible location for a hotel, though. It’s like a block away from the Pearl Street Mall, one of the most successful car-to-pedestrian street conversions I’ve seen, coming up on its 50th anniversary. That could cut down on some of the car trips you’d expect a hotel to add, as visitors can go out to eat or shop without getting into the rental car.

Edit: Well I read the article again, more carefully this time and found out that: “Fox Tuttle Transportation Group, a consultant hired by the city, found that nearby garages have enough capacity to absorb parking demand from the hotel and loss of those spaces.” So forget what I said about how they’re probably going to build a parking garage. I guess you unload your suitcases and then go park in a nearby garage. 🤷

Overall I thought it was an amusing parlor trick but when I found out how much energy it uses I want it to die in a fire and for everyone to forget it was ever invented.

I just started Dumb Luck by Vu Trong Phung. I was browsing through Book Street in Vietnam and found this, one of the few that was translated into English. I’m excited, I’ve never read a Vietnamese book before. It was written in 1936, which was during the late French colonial period.

Are you counting the space taken up by the gas wells, transportation infrastructure, and storage facilities?

That’s cool. These do seem to be a bit cheaper than comparably configured Windows laptops. I already bought a Windows 11 Lenovo (and put Linux Mint on it), but in the future I will opt for pre-loaded Linux computers. Glad to see it catching on. I don’t think I’ll be shipping my computer to a Lenovo service center to get a refund on the Windows license, but I may write a nasty email.

Yeah but you have to pay for the sunshine every year that you use to power the panels. And you have to build pipelines to transport that sunshine from the faraway places where it’s developed, and sometimes you have to liquefy it a load it onto gigantic tanker ships and carry it overseas, and there’s always a risk of it exploding and…oh, wait. I’m thinking of the gas. Never mind.

It’s also fun. I always have a smile on my face when riding back from a grocery run or dinner out. Driving a car used to just make me aggravated.

I heard about a company that sold laptops with Linux installed instead of Windows and I checked it out, expecting it to be a couple hundred dollars cheaper for a comparable machine, on account of not having to pay Microsoft a license fee. But actually if anything they were more expensive, so I was disappointed.
