You should watch this lovely video from TechnologyConnections: https://youtu.be/_rBO8neWw04
I agree completely and I’m in the same boat. Hopefully “community migration” becomes possible where you can ship all your posts to a new instance if necessary.
Lemmy is the closest thing yet for sure.
The main pros: decentralized*, productive conversations, no karma, open source.
The main con is that “decentralized” is a good idea, but it only works if practiced. Most people have jumped onto lemmy.world instead of spreading out. Minor cons include a lack of decent video embedding, missing some niche communities, and small bugs.
Overall I’ve rediscovered a lot of the internet that I had simply stopped checking because reddit took over my digital life. I read HackerNews again, the NYT, and a lot more. It’s nice.
I had no idea about that foundation - it seems like they’ve done a lot of great work. Thanks for sharing!
Sync should have this when it comes out! Hopefully a beta will be released soon
Connect does. Unfortunately it’s all based on polling (asking the server if there are any comments) every so often, instead of being notified immediately. Lemmy doesn’t support sending out notifications (yet?)
keebio has some good options for affordable split keyboards
See if you can get a used Quadro P4000 from someone local to you (eBay in the US, for example). I got mine for about $80. It’s basically just a GPU for video encoding, but it’s done a fantastic job handling everything I’ve thrown at it, and it’s a huge upgrade over a CPU.
You can also post on the c/selfhosted@lemmy.world community (I hope that link works! Here’s another if it didn’t)
I really think the “porn” name should be changed. I never feel comfortable recommending communities that have “porn” in the name - it’s pretty embarrassing. Maybe something like “spacepics” could work?
