Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•A time machine that allows you to travel as a ghost would be the best time machine.
6·2 年前Not quite, the true invariant quantity is the magnitude of the spacetime 4 vector, which depends on rest mass.

9·2 年前It actually goes further than that. In spacetime you’re always going the same speed, the more in space, less in time.
At least from the special relativity perspective.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•It seems like all packaged foods do this nowEnglish
131·2 年前That seems around what I’d expect the measurement error to be anyway

Linux Questions@lemmy.zip•How good/bad are the Linux drivers for Intel Arc GPUs right now?English
3·2 年前I’m interested in trying to install Linux on my arc laptop, I’m wondering as well. I might try in the next few days.

[Dormant] Electric Vehicles (Moved to !electricvehicles@slrpnk.net)@lemmy.world•[Question] Do charging stations generally accept credit/debit cards?
6·2 年前I’ve only rented an ev, but only about half the time they have successfully taken a cc. Either they were broken, or it was just missing.
A lot of them have apps, which is very annoying as a renter, but if you own the car it should be less of an issue.
Afaik you don’t actually need to purchase a subscription to use them.

Collapse@lemmy.ml•Collapse Will Look Nothing Like in the MoviesEnglish
1·2 年前Eventually yes, but I personally think that recycling solar panels and so on could slow collapse much more than the author suggests.

4·2 年前Also batteries, lithium is expensive so a lot of companies are trying to come up with cheaper, but also more sustainable alternatives. And they already have with lithium iron phosphate that requires less lithium. And as prices for a substance rise, so will the desire for alternatives and recycling.

Food@slrpnk.net•19 herbs, spices, sweeteners, and acids that make your food last longer
9·2 年前Adding sugar in low amounts to food will make it spoil faster. Sugar is only a preservative at high sugar concentrations to prevent bacterial growth.
Notably missing from this lists are acids: lemon juice, vinegar, citric acid which will lower ph and slow bacterial growth.

Cool Guides@lemmy.ca•Which Countries Have the Largest Forests?English
4·2 年前Id like to see this normalized for country size. As is, its really just a country size list, with some slight variations.

General Discussion@lemmy.world•With the controversy with the border in Texas. Why has no once asked what is driving so many to the boarder?
181·2 年前We caused, indirectly or even directly, many of the causes that people are trying flee from in their home countries in Latin america.
The vast majority of them are trying to flee gang violence.

NoVA / Northern Virginia@dmv.social•What the hell VirginiaEnglish
4·2 年前George mason.
I’m not sure how much it will be enforced, and based on how Mason had a vaccine mandate until sued I’m guessing something similar happened.
Or it will be used against pro Palestinian protestors.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Does taking my glasses off to 'let my eyes rest' actually have any meaningful effect? Or am I just making my eyes work harder?
2·2 年前I think it depends, farsighted? Probably not.
Nearsighted looking at things hopelessly out of focus and not trying to look, perhaps.
I’m very nearsighted amd taking my glasses seems to make them relax, since nothing will be close enough to make them focus.
Somebody that’s farsighted might strain their eyes to focus without their glasses.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How long will food be safe to eat if frozen immediately after cooking it?
412·2 年前They will be safe to eat indefinitely, but may not be palatable, depending on how it’s stored.

[Outdated, please look at pinned post] Casual Conversation@lemmy.world•How much should I care about news?English
8·2 年前There are other elections throughout the year… Midterms at the federal level, and often state and local elections too.
Admittedly how it works in the US, but I’m sure still applies in other countries, maybe not everywhere.

Solarpunk Urbanism@slrpnk.net•Your City's Wealth Isn't Where You ThinkEnglish
4·2 年前Those lots are probably a quarter the size of the lot I’m on, in a affluent suburban house. Maybe even smaller
Its true that it’s not that dense though.
It’s also pretty likely that there are more residents per house than a typical affluent neighborhood.

Yes but that’s socialist.
And goes against my donors paycheck.
/s but many people in charge are willfully ignorant that society can be built in a way that doesn’t rely on cars.
