Something happened a decade ago to a single person. Therefore it follows it affects millions now in ways that persuade me my world view is correct.
I see.
they can control the narratives and conversations and public sentiment
That sounds almost conspiratorial. How many people know of Reddit, use it, then automatically follow the narrative? Like out of the total population?

HugeNerd@lemmy.cato World News@lemmy.world•As top Trump aides sent texts on Signal, flight data show a member of the group chat was in RussiaEnglish2·12 days agoI assume for that to happen, a significant portion of the American political system would be in trouble. It’s not so much that Trump is some unique phenomenon, it’s more like he’s not subtle about it. We’re being screwed every day by the leader class, they’re just quiet enough about it that most people go back to their NASCAR and high-fructose corn syrup snacks.

Why are you so resistant to facts?
Thanks for the summary.
HugeNerd@lemmy.cato Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•"You should probably just throw it away"English1·15 days agoI did: “how do you get computer viruses”
Answer: “Computer viruses can be spread via email, with some even capable of hijacking email software to spread themselves. Others may attach to legitimate software, within software packs, or infect code, and other viruses can be downloaded from compromised application stores and infected code repositories.”
Try it yourself. No mention of Windows 7, all about USERS INSTALLING THEM.
QED.
Ah, finally a reason to upgrade from Windows 7: to make sure the slop really gets into every nanosecond of human existence.

“I have no actual evidence, but it feels good to me.”
What’s agressive is forcing endless upgrades for no reason. No one can even provide a single source of evidence for these amazing Hollywood viruses besides “everyone knows” or urban legends. You don’t even check into what really happens and happily confirm your bias.
Like I said a million times, you have to purposely run an executable to get these amazing trojans and viruses. Windows 7 doesn’t magically pull them out of the ether and runs them with a 24 style countdown timer.

Ah, Coffiest is finally here.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Space_Merchants
“In a vastly overpopulated world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge trans-national corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and by far the best-paid profession. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that the quality of life is improved by all the products placed on the market. Some of the products contain addictive substances designed to make consumers dependent on them. However, the most basic elements of life are incredibly scarce, including water and fuel.” This in 1952. Mad Men indeed.
I’m just sitting here laughing by myself in my miserable densified cardboard shack I live in.
A quote from the book:
“each sample of Coffiest contains three milligrams of a simple alkaloid. Nothing harmful. But definitely habit-forming. After ten weeks the customer is hooked for life. It would cost him at least five thousand dollars for a cure, so it’s simpler for him to go right on drinking Coffiest - three cups with every meal and a pot beside the bed at night, just as it says on the jar.”
HugeNerd@lemmy.cato Canada@lemmy.ca•For the sake of our democracy, American hedge funds should be banned from owning Canadian newspapers.English3·17 days agoI figured things were at the end when Nespresso pulled out their boutique from the flagship downtown Montreal location last year, or two years ago.
The homeless tents lined up on the West and East sides of the building didn’t help, or the defective escalators.
They say the retail landscape changed too much and passed them by, but downtown there’s Simon’s that has IMO pretty much the same large store with clothes, sheets, bath supplies. No appliances or perfumes though, maybe The Bay was just too big.
I’ve seen them on the bus I think.
