  • The 49ers weren’t going to play Detroit on Thanksgiving Day because they are a Pacific Time Zone team. (The Lions haven’t hosted a team located west of the Central Time Zone on Turkey Day in over 30 years.)

The 49ers probably weren’t going to play Dallas on Thanksgiving Day during the Montana/Young era because 1) they had to be scheduled to play at Dallas in a given season, 2) CBS and NBC (and later Fox and NBC and then Fox and CBS) would alternate televising Detroit and Dallas, meaning the 49ers would only be a possibility to play on Turkey Day in Dallas every other year, and 3) the NFL gets huge TV ratings on Thanksgiving for the afternoon games because of the captive audience, and they weren’t going to waste a marquee 49ers/Cowboys matchup that would get huge ratings whenever it was played by playing it on Thanksgiving. The only time the 49ers might have played at Dallas during the Montana/Young era was when the Cowboys were down (1987 to 1991, and really only 1989 or 1990).

  • Rozelle consulted Pierre Salinger, a personal friend of his who was President Kennedy’s press secretary, within hours of Kennedy’s assassination asking him for his recommendation whether that Sunday’s games two days later should be played. Salinger thought the Kennedys would have wanted the games to be played.

It should be noted the AFL decided to postpone their games almost immediately. Patriots owner Billy Sullivan, who was friendly with the Kennedy family (and of course had his team based in JFK’s native Boston), particularly pushed hard for the postponement.

  • Actually, I think those last 5 college football games Bagent played that they showed during the Amazon Prime Video broadcast were 1) the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship game (which Shepherd lost to IUP, aka Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and 4) four D2 playoff games (first round, Super Regional 1 semifinals, Super Regional 1 championship/national quarterfinals, and national semifinals).

NOTE: I follow D2 football, especially the PSAC (root for 3 different teams, one of which is IUP, my graduate school alma mater), and Shepherd is the second-closest D2 team to where I currently live. I’ve actually gone to a couple of Shepherd home games (in 2019 & 2021) when they hosted one of those teams I follow. Shepherd has been a strong D2 football program for most of the last 30 years.
