Via war and it’s fallout, yes. The disruption to food, safe water, shelter, medical care, etc can increase the death toll well beyond direct casualties. Those are the most immediate effects, which doesn’t take into account the extreme pollution caused by munitions or burning structures/vehicles. All this is also only considering the use of “conventional” weapons.

I’m not sure about this specific location, but I have seen similar structures (including being inside one) as a foreign visitor. There is something quite striking/humbling about large statues or similar structures when they dwarf anything in the area. They definitely give me a more surreal vibe in comparison to natural formations that stand out in similar ways.
